You don't get that fine control that you have with a foot pedal on a dedicated TIG welding machine.  So, you have some trial and error setting the amperage on the welder.  But, at the mfg. I worked for, many of their TIG welders were setup that way, using a DC arc welder for the power source and an air cooled TIG torch.  They were able to TIG weld materials down to 16 GA and 18 GA just fine.
