Here in the UK we have to remove the brake light circuit from the indicator circuit as we are not allowed to have red flashing indicators only orange so we rewire the reversing lights to run orange LED's so we know the wiring can be difficult to deal with, I've been trying to get LED bulbs to work on the front flashers for a while, I think I could separate the marker from the indicator but I quite like the odd flashing arrangement and as it works on the back ( a mixture of LED and filament bulbs) I want it on the front.

You said the indicators work without the marker lights on, have you pulled all the marker light bulbs and seen if the flashers work with the headlights on?
If they do work then try putting single marker light bulbs in and if a single "corner" creates a problem that will narrow the problem area down.

The reason I posted the bit about the markers grounding through the flasher filaments is because to fix a fault you first have to understand 
how it was designed to work and I guess Ford didn't think much of it as it's only 70/71 cars.
Yes replaced all bulbs (not dash) with led except the side marker lights. As far as I know the lights were bad for a long time because I never drove the car at night just went to car shows. Have had the car for 21 years with no problems. Crazy . I will try and see if I have power to each side marker wire maybe the sockets are bad. I will try your idea first about replacing bulbs one at a time first sounds good to try. Thanks

Just the blinker flasher by the glove box not the 4 way by the gas pedal.

I'd change the other flasher unit as well, I've just discovered that LED's dont work in the marker lights unless they are NOT " polarity sensitive" so I will have to put filament bulbs back in until I can find some.
