Blinkers on solid

Tongue
Lost-- blinkers work with the running lights off put running lights on and blinkers stay on solid. Replaced the light switch, blinker and 4 way harness wiring through the column. Checked all bulbs and sockets for lights all good. Flasher fuse ok and fuse in fuse box ok. Sport lights ok. 1970 mustang Mach 1 It's like the power is running back through the blinker wires. Nothing has bad ground that i can see. Could it be the harness to the light switch? Does not make sense to me. Everything works fine until the  light switch is turned on. Side markers lights never did work but sockets look good took bulbs out one at a time and blinkers still on solid. How can I check the wiring for the marker lights that never worked before maybe grounded. At the socket for power? Thanks Crazy

Thanks I just looked at that and all bulbs are ok. Never seen that but it could happen. I think it has to be the wiring that goes to the light switch somehow it's bad ????? I guess all I have to do is be home before dark.  Laughing I still have some humor left but not much.

This explains how the marker lights were earthed.
After i read it I had to go and check my 70 mach 1 indicators did what it said and they do!!

The 1970-71 Ford turn signal system is wired quite uniquely which creates a challenge when converting to LED bulbs. The side marker lights are grounded through the filaments of the front turn signal bulb. This feature that causes the side marker bulb to flash in unison with the turn signals. However, when the headlights or running lights are on, the side marker bulbs flash opposite of the turn signals. When the front bulbs are converted to LED, the running light current from the original side marker lights is sufficient to turn on the front LED bulb, therefore the need to convert the side marker bulbs to LED too. This circuit configuration also means that the side marker LEDs must be bi-directional.

Hope the info helps.

Odd lighting issues can almost always be traced back to a grounding problem.

I'm with Steve, it's most likely a grounding issue. Rust and/or paint can cause a poor ground, I would check the ground for the running lights first. They may be grounding through the blinker lights.

My understanding is that they do earth through the indicator bulbs.
I've just put LED bulbs in the marker lights and they either work as marker lights or if you turn them around as indicators but not both so I have to find non polarity sensitive ones. This only applies to 70 / 71 cars.

If you turn the indicators on, the marker lights flash WITH the indicators but if you turn the side lights on they flash OPPOSITE the front indicator.

Thanks my side marker lights never did work at all. In the front you can unplug them from the harness by headlights. Nothing happens to the blinker lights they stay on. In the trunk I will see if there is power to the bulb socket at the side light. If you take all the bulbs from the side markers out will that not solve the problem of the side markers being the problem? or will that cause a open line?

Just looked at a wiring diagram and I see how the side lights are wired to the blinker lights. How can none of the side marker lights work when the rest work. I can see one not working  but all 4 side lights? I see where just the front might not work or just the back side not work but all 4. Got to be the side lights.

Is this a new problem or from when you got the car?
I take it you are not using any LED bulbs at the moment?
Here in the UK we have to remove the brake light circuit from the indicator circuit as we are not allowed to have red flashing indicators only orange so we rewire the reversing lights to run orange LED's so we know the wiring can be difficult to deal with, I've been trying to get LED bulbs to work on the front flashers for a while, I think I could separate the marker from the indicator but I quite like the odd flashing arrangement and as it works on the back ( a mixture of LED and filament bulbs) I want it on the front.
We also have to wire a separate sidelight usually into the new headlights we fit and can get a bit of "feedback" from the flashers unless the combination of bulbs (LED and filament) is correct.

You said the indicators work without the marker lights on, have you pulled all the marker light bulbs and seen if the flashers work with the headlights on?
If they do work then try putting single marker light bulbs in and if a single "corner" creates a problem that will narrow the problem area down.

The reason I posted the bit about the markers grounding through the flasher filaments is because to fix a fault you first have to understand
how it was designed to work and I guess Ford didn't think much of it as it's only 70/71 cars.
