Upgrade to electric fuel pump

Ok so my Holley 4 barrel carb was tired and needed replacing so I went with an Edelbrock AVS2 650 double pumper. Looks beautiful but isn’t getting the fuel pressure it needs when I jump on it from a stop. I was told I need an electric pump and a regulator that has 6-8 psi for the carb to work properly. How many guys have installed one on their Mach 1? I would like to find the most quiet pump I can. I’m fine with finding a location to mount the pump and regulator, just wanna know what works best on our cars and any tips on what’s the best circuit to tap into when I wire it.
Side note….also determined that my cam lobes are a bit worn. So this winter the motor will come out. I’m sure it will snowball from there. Lol…

Or can I get a high pressure mechanical pump? Of course I’d prefer to not have to go the electric pump route if not needed.

Well from my experience with an Carter 650 AFB (virtually identical to the Edelbrock) on my 351C.  I believe it's to small for it. When the hammer was dropped suddenly mine would bog slightly, then recover, and scream for the moon. I found out it was jerking the rear flapper plate wide open when I slammed the throttle to the floor suddenly. There are different spring kits etc. to allow you to fine tune it, and help the situation. But even in stock trim. If you have the 4 barrel heads, and even a mild cam. The air fuel requirements, are well above a 650CFM carb. That being said a fuel pressure gauge plumbed in will help determine where you're at. And if you really need a higher pressure or not. I had one of the old Holley fuel pumps on mine for a while, and it was the most temperamental damn thing. It would quit without warning, tap it and it would work again. Till finally I took it off, and smashed it into little pieces, ripping my 3 fingers open in the process, Yeah I was pissed!!! So I reconnected the stock carter mechanical, and drove off. It ran every bit as good on the stock mechanical pump, as it did with the Holley Electric pump, and it never failed me, and this was on a 500HP engine.  I had a 750 Holley double pumper on it for a while, and while it was faster with the 750 it was terribly finicky and troublesome. So I stuck the 650AFB back on and drove it. Just my thoughts.  Cool

Well looks like trial and error…I replaced the mechanical pump with a Carter pump that was supposed to be rated at 6 psi. Well either it wasn’t or I got a crap one. Drove it for 20 mins and it died. So screw it, it’s getting an electric pump and regulator.

Are you sure you don't have something plugging the pickup in the tank? I once knew a truck driver whose wife came up to help him clean out his truck. While she was on the other side of the truck, he took a pair of panties out of his bunk, and shoved them in the fuel tank opening. They floated around and as the fuel got a little low, they would block the pickup and the truck would shut down without warning?? He had several shops including ours work on the truck, with no issues found we tried several things until one day someone looked inside the tank, and saw them floating. We pulled them out, and when he picked up his truck. All he could say was that those were the most expensive panties in the world. He had put them in the fuel tank. To keep his wife from finding them. True Story. LOL.


The new pump most likely isn't your problem.

Well just got it back from my buddy adding an electric fuel pump. Super super quiet and works perfectly. She's a flowin now!! Idle is perfect, and I can drop the hammer from a stop and it runs like a raped ape.

Good deal glad it worked out. Just cause I'm old and experienced doesn't mean I know everything. LOL!  Wink

Edelbrock carbs are not double pumpers. If performance is a concern, stick with a holley type.  The accelerator pump  circuit likely needed tuning and not more fuel pressure.

Yea my mistake..it’s not a double pumper. Lol. But it has great flow now and runs great. I was a little skeptical about having a pump in the engine bay and above the tank level but this one is fine to be ran this way. I like the Edelbrock too. Always had Holleys in the past but I like the simplicity of this one
