Boss or not?
#1
Hi,

I'm trying to understand the engine in my '70 mach 1.
I bought it as a 2v with a 4v Holley on it but the more I take it apart the more I find out.

The intake manifold is a D1ZX-9425-DA which according to mustangtek is a "351C and BOSS 351 Unique competiton part" ( does that mean it was only fitted on the Boss or not?)
The heads are 4* with a date code of "1C18" march 71 I think, so maybe CC or maybee not
The valve covers have the drip fingers etc inside and look like Boss ones
There are pushrod guides C9ZE-6A564-C which again appears to be a Boss part
I've had the sump off and it's a 2 bolt mains

I've been in touch with the second owner (1998 - 2007) and he told me the original owner worked at a Ford / Lincoln dealership and had "Pantera heads fitted"

Were Panteras sold through Lincoln dealers and does that make it more likely the heads are CC ones?

Any thoughts guys?

Cheers
Jeff

Well Jeff things are getting blurred a little. I have no idea where you've come up with the CC designation??? I've never heard that term ever dealing with anything Ford.  CJ yes. It refers to Cobra Jet.

The 4* simply means 4 barrel.

I do believe Panteras were sold through Lincoln Mercury Dealerships. Not 100% but pretty sure.

The intake is for a 351 C (Cleveland) engine, the part number would suggest it was from a Boss351.

The block being a 2 bolt main, should simply be a 351 C, and not a Boss 351. I believe the Boss 351 's were all 4 bolt mains.

The 351 Boss was a high performance version of the 351C . They are virtually the same engine just some hipo parts added to a std 351 C to get a 351 Boss.

I'm not sure which version of the Cleveland series, of 4 barrel heads the Pantera got. There were open, and closed chamber, as well as a couple different combustion chamber volumes. But referring to them as "Pantera" heads I think is likely more "bench racing" then anything else, as I don't believe they were anything more then a set of Hi Performance 4 barrel Cleveland heads.

Keep digging you'll find some answers. Maybe not the one's you'll want, but answers none the less.

Hope it helps

Hi JT,
CC for closed chamber, I've realised it has studs not bolts on the rockers and I'm starting to think the engine was changed after the 2nd owner sold it as he thought it was the original engine but from the partial vin I can just about see on a brass plate through the Hooker headers it's not original now.
From what I've read when I take the manifold off I will be able to confirm it has closed chamber heads by reading a casting number?

Perhaps they were just Boss 351 parts?

Kinda sounds like you've got some boss parts on top of a standard block. I had a rust bucket of a 72 Mustang, when I looked at it. It had a 65" Model 4 barrel carb, the intake was a 65" 289 intake, the spark plugs were the old 13/16 plugs. I was getting excited as I thought I had found a 65 K code motor! Even though it was in a 72"  Turns out someone had put all those parts on top of a 1978 302 block. So I had a morphydite. Dang. Keep Digging. Numbers don't lie! but people do. Pray  LOL!
