Fuel pump & carb replacement

Sorry for the delay. I forgot to update. We are up and running. Had a hell of a time just pulling the oil pan but finally got it out. New oil pump went in smoothly along with the pan after I straightened the edges that we’re getting hung up. Took my time installing the new distributor and it went in correctly. The new fuel pump is putting out 6.5 to 7.0 psi. Perfect. I replaced the radiator and fan clutch because they were the incorrect ones. Went smooth. Installed the new carb and I was getting no fuel to the carb. Checked the pressure again and it was perfect but I had no fuel in the tester hose. Found that I had a kink in the hose from the tank line to the pump from when I had to lift the engine to remove the oil pan. Fixed that and she fired right up. Set the idle and the timing and took her for a spin. Seemed kind of dead though so I looked at the box the carb came in and it was a 600 CFM not a 750 like I ordered. Got the correct 750 and we are good to go. Thanks for everybody’s help. I really appreciate it.  Awes Awes Awes Awes Awes

Cool  Cool, it's absolutely great when it all comes together, and works as it's supposed to. And then to realize how everything went astray in the first place. Glad to hear all is well, and you didn't hurt anything else in the process. Sounds like a win win to me.  Cool

Glad we could be of help. Kudos to all who joined in.  Thumbup

Now I am moving on to fixing all of the little things that need attention (mostly interior items-seat belts, stereo, etc). I am still in the “I haven’t decided yet” mode about converting it from the C6 to a 4 speed Toploader. Might be a winter project. Can’t do too much in Minnesota in the winter so that would keep me occupied. My garage is heated. If anyone has done it before and has some pointers, I would gladly accept them. Thanks all.

Glad to hear everything worked out and the motor is running fine!

I did an automatic to 4-speed conversion in my 69 Mach 1 during the restoration.  Most of the linkage parts are available new reproduction. The conversion wasn't difficult.  It merely amounts to gathering all the parts.  On an assembled car, the most difficult part will be installing the clutch pedal, over ride spring, and brake pedal for a manual transmission.  You'll have to remove the dash pad to easily get to everything.  That's not a bad job.  Removing the dash pad might take 20 minutes.  The shifter uses the same opening in the floor as the automatic shifter.  Think about how you drive the car to decide whether you want a close ratio or wide ratio 4 speed.  Close ratio trans is best for more "spirited driving" and wide ratio trans is best for basic cruising around like you would with your daily driver.

If you are not certain what parts are needed for the conversion, I'd go through Perogie Enterprises.  They have a huge collection of NOS, used and some repro parts and know these cars very well.  Some complain their prices are high, but in my experiences they are in line with everybody else.

Thanks for the advice. I have already decided on the close ratio if I do it. I’ve already had the dash out when I rewired the whole car. That was fairly easy to do. (Glad a researched the speedo cable removal). I figured like you did that the pedal placement will be the biggest issue. I hear good things about David Kee toploaders so I might go through them for the trans. I’ll check out Perogie. I wish somebody had a complete kit like you can get for the 5 & 6 speeds. I also wish somebody had a complete list of what is needed all the way down to the last nut and bolt. I want to have it all on hand. Like I said in my previous post, I haven’t decided if I’m doing it yet but there is nothing better than an old school 4 speed. Automatics are boring. I need to decide soon so I can move forward on some interior items. (Center consoles are different). Thanks for your help.

I have purchased trans parts from David Kee when I rebuilt my close ratio Toploader.  He's a bit pricey for parts, but he has everything for those transmissions, including making his own parts that are otherwise no longer available.

As far as consoles, it's merely the top plate that is different between the auto trans and 4-speeds.  And then, the auto trans console will fit and work fine with a 4-speed shifter.  But a 4-speed console will not work with an auto trans shifter.

Thanks for the info.
