Possible rare Quadrajet 7040286
#1
So I am starting my first project car, it’s a 1962 Fairlane. I am going through all of my dads parts he’s been collecting all these years. I am looking for a carb for a 460 I am putting in the car. I find this Quadrajet, looking up the numbers on it for a rebuild kit.

It looks like it might be a rare Carburetor off the 70-71 429 cobrajet. I thought this would be the best place to get expert advice on it. The main number on the side is 7040286 then just below that is 2530

What do y’all think?

First of welcome to the Club, At least you're working on a Ford! A 62 Galaxie will be a cool ride and one you won't find at a lot of car shows. Welcome  Thumbup

Well I do know Ford did use the Quadrajet, but don't know about the Cobrajet? There are some here that should be able to shed some light on it. judging from the tag, accelerator solenoid, fuel filter, and dash pot for the choke assembly. It has all the ear markings of a Ford Carb. That being said, the presence of the carb solenoid, would lead me to believe it came on a car with A/C. Which I wouldn't think to many cars with a 429 Cobrajet, would have come with A/C????? But God knows, I've seen weirder things in the last 61 years. So we'll have to let the experts tell us. They should be along Shortly.   Cool

I too know that Ford used Quadrajet carbs on a few motors.  I've even seen Qjet carbs on a few Mopars.  But don't know exactly what years and wouldn't expect it to be from a performance motor.  Don't misunderstand, I like Qjet carbs and have built at least 100 of them when I worked as a mechanic.  They have excellent street manners because of the extremely small and sensitive primary venturies.  On the down side, those small primary venturies sometimes cause troubles on performance motors with aggressive cams.  In some cases on a performance motor at idle the air speed through the small primaries is high enough so that fuel starts dribbling through the main boosters.

I'd hold on to that carb, but consider something else for your 62 Galaxie.  1962 is a few years before my time, but, didn't they always use Holley carbs on performance motors back then?

By the way, welcome, and a 62 Galaxie is a great car.

Best $200 I ever spent. 65-72 Ford parts and illustrations catalogs. Although I think you can
now buy them on computer disc cheaper. But who has a computer in their shop?

You are right not many have a computer in their shop. Besides I can always find things in a book, ten times faster then I can ever find it, on the computer! I hate computers!!!  To Err is human, to really futch up takes a computer!

Just my thoughts.
