Auto Trans Dipstick
#1
This is a late model Mustang question I hope to find an answer to.  We have a 2016 Mustang with a V6 and auto trans.  It's a daily driver my wife commutes to work with.  It is already approaching 60K miles by the time it needs another engine oil and filter change.  I want to also service the trans at that time.

Question:  In Fords wisdom the only dip[stick is about 3" long and screws into the case where old school dipstick tubes use to fit, rt. front corner.  Who makes a dipstick tube and dipstick kit I can install so I am not laying under the car trying to fill and check the fluid with the engine running?  I found one from Performance Automatic, has anybody used their stuff because it looks kind of cheap.  I believe the trans model is a 6R80.  Does Ford have a dipstick and tube for slightly older Mustang that fits?

I guess this is another attempt by Ford to prevent people from doing their own service and repair work.

Thanks for any input.

Mike,

Absolutely ridiculous location...

I could not find any dipstick upgrades online.  It must have been designed by the parts/service department to lure people in to spend money.   Before you know it you will have to drop the oil pan to put air in the tires!

I have my radar on so if you I see anything I will let you know.

It is ridiculous.  If you have a hoist it's wouldn't be bad.  You can stand under the car while its running to check or adjust the fluid level.

In the owners manual it states the transmission is "lubed for life" and if a leak occurs to take it to a Ford service dept. to have it repaired.

Ideally, I'd like an OEM dipstick tube and dipstick from an earlier model, if they interchange.

I am curious when the say "lubed for life" does that mean there is no longer any service requirement?  And if so, what changed that they no longer require service?

Is there enough clearance to run an old style OEM tube? It seems like everything is really tight on these new cars.

I found on one forum that Ford states the fluid will last 150K and they call that "lube for life".  I guess what they are saying is the trans is expected to last 150K miles.  With that, I'm thinking Ford wants me to throw the car away at 150K miles and buy a new one.  Transmissions typically last much longer when serviced regularly and have sufficient cooling.  I tend to keep cars a very long time.  I have no interest in buying a new car every 5 years or so.  My daily driver F150 is 23 years old.  Mustangmike, your wife might call me cheap.

The 2016 Mustang has a 3.7L V6 motor and the engine compartment is big.  There is a lot of room under the hood.  I certainly didn't want a 5.0L GT for a car that is driven in commute traffic every day.

This reply isn't regarding the dip stick but the company I work for purchases high voltage circuit breakers. Many manufacturers are now labelling them as "maintenance free" but they certainly are not.
