In my other thread I am rebuilding my toploader transmission. My input shaft is fine. But, I've noticed some replacement input shafts have a few syncro engagement teeth removed. Am I correct assuming that is so the input shaft can be installed and removed without dropping the countershaft to the bottom of the case? Is that feature of a few engagement teeth removed on both wide and close ratio input shafts?

I've seen that article a few times. It makes no mention of the replacement input that have a few engagement teeth removed. I thought I saw that in an older magazine article on rebuilding a toploader transmission. Haven't found it again to double check.
If my assumption is correct, it would make assembly much easier.
Here is the article. It only mentions the teeth are removed to clear the countershaft gear during installation. Not 100% clear if the countershaft still needs to be dropped.

If I had the special tool to install the rear bearing and not have to move the trans over to my press then back to the bench I would be more confident the dummy shaft will hold everything in place. What concerns me is even with assembly grease, a thrust washer or one of those small flat washers at the end of the needle bearings will fall out of place.
