more rear movement on front seats.

Hi there,

Any tips on gaining extra leg room on a 71-73 fastback. I have the seat back as far as it will go but would love some extra leg room. Is there a kit or mod to allow the seat to go back further.

Cheers

Geez Dude how tall are you as I've seen several 6 foot plus guys, that had no trouble fitting in a 71 -73 Mach1?? Or even saying anything about being cramped? ----- I know, you're six foot tall with 4 foot legs---- LOL! Just kidding JTS 71 Mach1

6 foot I am but maybe there is something I have done wrong. Are the tracks the same for both sides. I have just installed a tm1 sports upgrade seat cover kit and it's very tight in there. I heard the electric seat base gives you an extra inch or so on the retraction.

I will bet that you have room for legs but have a hard time getting in and out of the seat because of the larger wings on the seats right?

A tilt steering column will help.

Just getting past that steering wheel with the legs for me was tough until I got a tilt column.

Yeah..you are right on the money. Seems to be getting better as the new foams bed in.

I am 6'4" and it is a tight fit with bent knees to drive a 71-73 that has non-tilt and manual seats.
Many are not aware of it but the front seats were relocated 1/2" farther rearward for either 72 or 73 ( can't remember which year).
1/2" isn't much, but it helps.

A smaller steering wheel diameter helps tremendously, as does adding about 1/2" or so spacers under the front brackets of the seats. ( I have used stacked washers for this with good results). The reclined position makes for more legroom.

A modified seat bracket with 2" more rearward mounting would be great...it would have to be fabbed up, though.

Great tips..Yes I agree that a modified track would be great. Don from Ohio mustang might see a small market and see what he can do. Must be the 73 with the seat mod as i have the 72 model.

There would not be a market for longer tracks at the price they would have to sell at.

I have not noticed any seat placement difference between 71 - 72 or 73's

I have seen 3/4 inch spacers used on some convetibles - not all but all the spacer ones I have found are identical.
I think it may have been a Ford / dealer fix when there was a vision or space complaint - that's just a guess though.

You should try Kit's spacers in the front idea first, that seems logical and easy enough

I have read that in several places over the years (along with the little-known supposed 1/2" longer shock travel for the front end).
I have never seen any independent verification of either though.
I assumed the mounting points on the floor pan were simply moved 1/2" more rearward, and the seats themselves recieved no modifications. Just as WAG (Wild Ass Guess) on my part though.

My '71 has power drivers seat and tilt, so it is a little better for me.

I have found the front edge of the seat platform is spot welded to the back edge of the frame rail extension.
If the platform gets moved back it would miss that frame edge.
