70 Mach 1 Value
#1
I'm looking at purchasing a 70 Mach 1 with Marti report, 351 Cleveland rebuilt by Jasper Engines with warranty good through August 2016. Transmission gone through while engine being rebuilt. Motor and engine compartment very nice looking, clean. Edelbrock 1406 600 cfm 4bb and 4 row aluminum radiator. Probably a single stage urethane paint, some chip marks on the edge of the hood that could use some touch-up paint, but overall paint is fine. Interior is good. Clock works, but not accurately. Moldings and gaps are good with no dings or scratches. Has rear window louvers and spoiler. Power steering, FMX cruiseomatic, magnum 500s with relatively new BF Goodrich radial TAs (originally argent wheels), and AC. Does $25,500 sound like a reasonable price? PS – Did any 69 or 70 Mach 1 come with Magnum 500s? - Thanks

Nice looking mach. Is it original #s matching? If so then I think it is a very good buy. See http://www.hagerty.com/valuationtools/HV...vbe=103285. Even if you compare against condition 3 for a 2bbl, its still a good value.

69 mach did not come from the factory with the magnum 500 wheel. just the 69 boss 302 it was an option for 1970. that looks like a nice car good luck to ya, just make sure you get underneath it and check the typical floors and frame rails for rust or wrinkles from an accident

For that kind of money it needs to be as clean and nice underneath, as it is on top. No rust, boo boo's or visible patches, as for that kind of money. It should be a very professional restoration, SSig_goodjob not concours, but definitely professional. Just my opinion. JTS 71 Mach1

I glanced through my Mustang Recognition Guide and according to that, Magnum 500's were only available as an optional wheel on Boss 302's and Boss 429's for both 69 and 70. I am not 100%, but that is what I expected.

I think the price will vary a little depending on geographical location. Here in Northern Calif., that would be about the selling price if the car has no hidden issues, and is as solid (disregarding some poor work) as is appears in the pictures.

I don't see any evidence of AC on the car. Plus that radiator, although an upgraded aluminum, is rather small, especially for an AC car.

Its a tough decision. My personal dilemma is its a beautiful car and probably worth the asking price, but none of the work on it jumps out as great or exceptional.

Myself, I wouldn't expect it to not need several small repairs. A possible couple of overlooked items needing replacement due to age are, steel and rubber brake lines, steel and rubber fuel lines and fuel tank.

I didn't read all the posts, but one key area to check are the shock towers in the engine compartment. The general area around the upper control arm mounting bolts tend to fatigue crack. Look for cracks or poor repairs made by simply welding the cracks. As you can imagine, a repair in that area can get costly on a finished car.

Mike

Thank You Mike - You're right, it doesn't have AC. I was confused between two cars I was looking at. I appreciate the shock tower info, will do. I see what you're saying regarding flaws along the hood, inside driver door jam, Mach 1 molding passenger side misaligned and potential goober under front bumper. He also said the interior door courtesy lights do not work (wiring is sliced), clock has power but is the wrong mechanism so does not keep accurate time. I think I can live with that. It's the only 69/70 Mach I can find at the moment. Sure would love to have a 4-speed though ;) Thanks for your response.

I converted my 69 Mach 1 to a close ratio 4sp during the restoration. They're fun if your only driving it occasionally. Are they firm on the price?

If you saw my introduction you'll notice I inherited my Mach 1 from an older brother. When I got the car it was a bare shell on dollies. This was back in 1995 and my brother paid . . . believe it or not . . . only $1000 for the car. And a California rust free car at that. It was missing only the 351W long block because the previous owner was going to part out the car. I remember the Mach 1 was sitting in a field next to the previous owners house in weeds about 3 ft. tall. The previous owner wanted to bring more toys home so had to clear out some older stuff and this Mach 1 didn't have much value to him.

Good luck, that 70 Mach 1 is nice. Look it over closely if your serious. Like I mentioned, it may mostly need a lot of small stuff to make big improvements. It will keep you busy on the weekends.

Best Regards,
Mike

I was paying my Hagerty insurance online today and noticed Hagerty has a "Valuation" utility. It covers 4 different condition levels. It may be worth looking into if you are still uncertain of the price. I went through it for a 1970 Mach 1 with a 2bbl 351 Cleveland. The sellers asking price for this car is in the ball park per that valuation utility.

I for one look at 70 Mach 1 cars nation wide every day as a hobby.
This car has several factors that to me stand out just in a first few photos.

No Rim Blow steering wheel
No (A/C)
Too many screws on the passengers side door panel.
Over spray all over the door rubber.
Wrong radiator and some wierd sort of Tranny cooler.

Its a $22,000 car period.
Ford made many of these cars and they are very easy to find.
Ill bet if you throw down $22,000 he will take it.

After you price all his repairs on his mistakes to make the corrections especially the a/c, then you will be right where another better car would be in the first place.
Its easy to put lipstick on the pig. (Aftermarket items and inferior workmanship)
Its hard and expensive to do it right the first time.Duh
