Need help to know what engine I have?

All Windsor Motors 221,260,289,302,331,351w,even the 429 and 460 which are based off of the Windsor motors, have the thermostat bolted to the end of the intake Manifold. The Cleveland series engines 302Boss, 351C, 351m, 400, are the only ones with the thermostat Bolted to the block next to the distributor. So it is absolutely not, a 302w. JTS 71 Mach1

OK, so I'm digging a bigger hole for myself here, BUT JTS71M1 you state the 302 Boss has the 'stat housing bolted to the block like the picture so why could the engine not be a 302? (Which were all made in the Geelong Ford plant here in Australia BTW)

Thank you so much to all for the answers that I for from you guys! A friend of mine that is mechanic but not familiar with the old engines told me that it was a 351C with the information that I got from you guys!
The previous owner try to put a filter similar to the original but it was a 400 air cleaner and didn't remove the sticker.

While technically possible to be a 302 "Boss". If it were, some one would have snatched it up, and have it in "cold storage" long before now, and it sure wouldn't be in an old mach 1, unless someone lost all good sense, and sanity. Beside it was fairly obvious you were thinking it was a windsor. Good try though. JTS 71 Mach1

The fact that the timing cover is part of the block (as shown in the first photo) would surely indicate the engine is not a 302, along with all the other features (valve covers, thermostat housing etc...) Looks like you'll have to get your hands dirty and troll around for block and head casting numbers. That way, you'll know exactly what you have. And oh, by the way, the thermostat housing on '69-'70 Boss 302 was bolted to the intake manifold, not the engine block. GXR

GXR You are 100% correct, I was always told the Boss 302 was a Cleveland block engine, simply a destroked 351c. I would have bet money on this as I've heard this discussed in many forums, garages etc, and most say it was a Cleveland based engine. Boy are they wrong after reading your post I said Bullshet! Then I pulled up some Images of a 1969 Boss 302, and lo and behold you are absolutely correct. The thermostat housing is bolted to the intake manifold, further inspection is that it is a Windsor block engine, (with Cleveland heads) due to the bolt on timing cover. I would have started a fight over this and have argued the point several times. And I was WRONG! Just goes to show nobody knows everything. JTS 71 Mach1

With so many engine "families" ( Windsor, 335, FE, and 385 series)...... Ford V-8 configurations can become confusing. It's all good. The last time I walked on water, I waited until the pond froze over.
