[attachment=10486][attachment=10486]Was wondering if anyone had any experience in changing out the original exhaust manifolds out of a 1971 429 mach 1? I realise this might be sacralege given my car is pretty much an unrestored original however I have gone about as far as I can with a 2.5 inch system and hooker aero chamber mufflers. The engine has been re built with the same spec cam as the super cobrajet 429 so it runs really strong, but it seems to be lacking in the exhaust department. I have researched a set of stainless block huggers but am not sure this will give me any improvements in power our sound. Does anyone have any recomendations on Tri ys or tuned length for my set up? I,m not concerned about any fabrication work required post the collectors as I know a great exhaust shop - they just don't have any experien with 429 cobrajets!
As I'm in australia I don't have a great range of 429 products to choose from if you know what I mean?

Just bought a set of these for my 67 GT 390 in ceramic coating. Very happy with fit and appearence of product. I have not finished the install yet so I cannot comment on performance. I can say that these are very well respected headers and manufacturer amongst the big block community.

I'am not a fan of shortie headers. As you get no real benefit except larger then stock tubes, and ease of fitment. Long tubes balance the exhaust pulses, and provide a feel it in the seat of your pants performance gains. I have run shorties on several vehicles and have not seen the same performance gain as with long tube headers. Any one else got an opinion? just my thoughts. Hooker does still make Super Comp headers for the 429/460 in a 71/73 Mustang. But they are quite pricey. JTS 71 Mach1
After looking at your pictures a little better. I believe the long tubes you show are a set of the Super Comp's I spoke of. The second set of long tubes are unfamiliar to me, as I've never seen a set for a 71/73. That the passenger side didn't have to come apart to go around the right front cross member/suspension? Hmmm? Yes, absolutely agree with you regarding the shorty headers. I suppose all the data and experience around the traps tells me to go with the first type in the photos - but very pricey! Unless there are any other views?
