True, but that has nothing to do with bringing a knife to a gun fight. Being a police officer, I bring a gun to every fight. Even off duty.

Now THAT's a good answer! It takes the old Boy-scout motto ("Always be Prepared") to a whole new level.

JTS, I don't discount your knowledge and experience, nor do I think you discount mine. We're both the conservative, blue collar, hands-on type. I don't disagree that the 400 can be worked to produce decent horsepower and torque. I only disagree with the numbers being thrown around. (horsepower and rpms) If the numbers you guys are quoting were realistic, we would all be driving 400 - powered Ford products. Although underrated at 370 hp, the 429CJ utilizes a heavy duty block, forged internals, high compression pistons, a relatively aggressive camshaft profile, free-flowing heads, intake and exhaust, a decent oiling system and a fat 750 cfm carb. AND, it made all that underrated horsepower at 5,600 rpms. The 429 in any version is all the things that a 400 is not. To make the 400 an "even close" contender, you would have to buy a 400 motor, take it home, and remove the heads, intake, carb., crank damper, pistons, cam and lifters, rocker arms and pushrods, timing chain and gears, etc. - and throw it all in the trash, because that's what it is, trash. Now go and buy those parts aftermarket, not to mention machine work that the block WILL need. Next, go buy rings, gaskets, new bolts (ARP) etc. Then, figure in all your labor, (You'll be doing this in your spare time I assume) and come up with a dollar value. I equate this endeavor with marrying Miss America only to find out later that she is a lesbian. OR...... buy a used 429 thunderjet (also factory underated at 365 hp) for a fraction of the cost. You'll never convince me that a warmed-over 400 will pull better numbers than a warmed-over 429. I'm beginning to think Ford cast the 429-460 bellhousing pattern into the 400 and 351-M because they knew motorheads would chuck the 351M or 400 and simply bolt in a 429 or 460.
I believe we're more alike than different even though I have to admit that, judging by the number of views to this thread, we've been entertaining the masses for the past week now. Let's just shake hands and agree to disagree on this one topic. GXR

Well I'm glad this is finally going to end with everyone in one piece. The only point I was trying to make (I started this) was that there was potential in the 400 so Masol shouldn't be concerned that his car has one in it. Is it the BEST engine Ford ever made? Hell no. We ALL know that. It' just not as "bad" as people make it out to be. It's fine for a mild street machine. It looks like that's all he wants.

As far as B.S. goes - When I was in High-School, I thought the 289 2v in my '67 coupe was a strong motor. Until I went for a ride in my friend's 'Cuda with a built 440. Biggrin

Well GXR you are correct, as I'm definitely not discounting you in any way. You seem to have a lot of knowledge about the Cleveland's (I guess I thought you'd be on my side) I can't help it you think the 400 is a turd. And If we disagree on the numbers So What, That's why they call it bench racing! Cause it's based on truth, that sometimes gets a little fuzzy, because there are no time slips etc, to back it all up. That doesn't mean it didn't happen. There's just no way to prove it. By the way I took all the classes and passed them to be a police officer, and decided against it, as the Chief was my best friend, and I figured he'd work me to death and I already had a full time job! I guess we are a lot alike. Cool! JTS 71 Mach1

PS I have a concealed carry permit so I have My 45 with me quite often as well.

My Brother had a 1978 T-Bird with a 351-M and it went pretty good for a big heavy car. I remember it being a very smooth running car with descent acceleration.
