73 owners only.

SSig_helpI am looking for anyone that is an 1973 Mach 1 owner, condition of car is not real important, to see if you car has the same process done to the undercarriage that mine has. In my reproduction of a 1973 Ford assembly manual it talks about applying sound deadening on the floor boards and wheel wells. I am trying to verify that this was done at the factory. Can anyone help, original cars or ones that never had anything done to the undercarriage is who at I need to hear from. I believe this to be on 73 only but if you have a original 71 or72 let me know also what your undercarriage looks like.

My brother is the second owner of a '73. When he bought the car, it was completely original - (paint, mechanicals, etc...). There was (is) a sound deadener applied to the underside of the floor panels, but none anywhere else. It is very thick and non-pliable, unlike the aftermarket coatings you commonly find. My car, a '71 built in Metuchen NJ, has the same type of coating in the fender wells but none on the floor pans. I know for a fact that some factory markings on the undercarriage and under the hood differ between the two assembly plants (Metuchen NJ and Dearborn MI) so maybe this plays into the coatings (or lack of) as well. The Metuchen plant closed down in Dec. 1971, and all '71-'73's built since then were Dearborn cars, so all the '73's should be relatively alike assembly-wise. Many restorers remove undercoatings to detail undercarriage components. GXR

Thank You, Clap_ I am trying to get MCA Judges to realize this was a process from Ford not something applied at the dealer. If anyone else sees this please let me know. I especially like that you let me know that your 71 does not have the coating this is what I am trying to prove to MCA that the 73 is the only year Ford sprayed this material on.

For any new or previous readers for help on sound deadener on the underside of you 1973 Mustang floor boards:
An update, there is a possibility that the date your mustang was built may be why there is sound deadener 'or not', could you see on your data tag when your mustang was built. If your car does not have the deadener please tell me and include the date it was built. I am making some head way on getting the rule changed and could use this information to make a better argument to get it changed. I was at the last show for 2014 and they did not take the 20 points off for undercoating so I was able to get a gold award again.

Thank You

Hey Lyndon,

I did not respond to your request earlier in that I am not an original owner, nor close to it.

However, my car is a very clean example. It has had a cheaper repaint in it's past but obviously no other body work has been done.

Here are a few shots of the underside of my floor pans. It is an April 19, 1973 build.

Steven thank you for your response. It isn't important that you are not the original owner or for that part what condition your car is in, I just need to see if there are any 73s that have this coating. There is a Ford build change that states after Nov of 72 these cars get the sound deadener. That's why the build date is important to me and it looks like yours falls in line with the directive.

My '72 doesn't appear to have any undercoating on the floors or wheel wells. I can't say, however, that it came like this from the factory as I've only owned the car for 5 yrs. My first Mustang was a '72 sports-roof sprint that had been Z-Barted so no help there either. The one thing I can say for sure is based on working in a "state of the art" auto assembly plant for 25 years, and at times on the sealer line as well as in the paint shop for 7 years. What I've learned is that the robotized application of undercoating was sporadic at best. There were times when the inner wheel wells were touched-up with black spray paint to give it "the look" of being coated completely. I know that's not really helpful but the point is that back in '73 as well as in 2008 (when I left due to my bad back) what the factory deemed acceptable varied on a day to day basis.
Your friend, Keith
