From 1969 to 1973 (in general) the 351C will drop right in where a 302 was originally. Ford shared the 302/351W bolt pattern with the 351C for motor mounts and bell housing. In those years space is not an issue as a 351C was factory fair (70-73).
Is a 302 good enough? I guess the old adage of "there is no replacement for displacement" come to mind BUT then I am not personally interested in a 429/460 for my Mach 1 either as I feel like my 351C is just "right".
In 1972 the 302 is rated between 140 t0 143 HP (210 in 1971), the 351C 2V at 161 to 164 HP (240 in 1971), the 351C 4V at 248 to 266 (285-330 in 1971) and the 429 at 205 HP (370-375 in 1971).
In comparison, my 86 5.0 GT is rated at 205 HP. Of course those are starting numbers. The 302 and the 351C can be built to make big HP numbers. Without the addition of external boosters (superchargers, blowers, turbocharges, etc.) the 351C will make more/ easier power.
I wouldn't pass on an F-code car if it was everything else that I wanted. Would I keep the 302? If it was a car in your price range, yes. If it was a shell or a complete rebuild, no.

100% agree with this. There is nothing worse than "underpower."

It can be a bit disappointing falling short of expectations when selecting and building a motor. So, plan ahead and do it right the first time. It more expensive going back and changing things afterwards.
And there is no Power like Horsepower...maybe torque but I can't make a rhyme (LOL)!

Torque will leave the other guy in your tire's smoke.

Who said horsepower sells cars but torque wins races? After all. 289, 302, 351, 390 (maybe), 428, and 429, what else is there to say?

Carroll Shelby was once quoted as having said, Horsepower sells cars but Torque wins races. I'm sure there were several others. JTS 71 Mach1
