engine rebuild

Ok so I have my engine out and ready to operate on. What are all things I should do while everything is out. I'm going to change the clutch and all seals. What else do you suggest I replace or check or whatever I should do to do this car right

That is sort of a broad question and without meaning to be facetious - everything that your time and money will allow.

Specifically, I would clean and repaint the interior of the doghouse. Replace any heater hoses that need replaced, any power steering hoses that need updated, rewrap any wiring that looks shabby, take a look at the inside of your cowl and see if it needs any attention, etc.

Just any job that is made easier with the absence of the motor. If your cross brace under the motor has been smacked, now would be a good time to straighten it and put it right.

Steve summed it up very nicely. I would suggest giving the engine compartment a very good cleaning, and thorough inspection for rust, cracks, or damage, and a fresh coat of paint. Like Steve mentioned, this is best time to get in there to work and nothing looks better than a nicely detailed engine compartment!!

A good plan is to check the timing chain for stretch. Take the distributor cap off, and watch how the rotor moves, while you turn the crank shaft with a socket and long handle bar on the harmonic balancer bolt. Turn slowly back and forth, the rotor should follow the same pattern. If there is delay in the rotor movement, that is due to chain stretch.
Easy to change it with the engine out of the car, use a good quality replacement timing set.

That is a broad question. Is the motor being completely rebuilt, just rings and bearings, or simply clean and regasket the motor? Do as much as your budget will allow that is easier to do with motor out of the car. If needed, skip stuff that is easy to do with the motor in the car.

+1 Mike - Just depends how far you are going in. I always de-burr every part as a starting point. Then get the pistons measured for height (pin to top) and con rods for length (big end to small end). Sort the long rod to the short piston.

Tighten the main bearings center to ends in three stages going opposite way each time. Use loctite 515 or 518 as gasket goo (not on the head gasket(s)). Maybe CC the combustion chambers. Make the finished result the size of the smallest before 'decking'.

Clean out the sump carefully and clean off the oil pump inlet grill.

Prime the oil pump before fitting and use a drill to get oil pressure before you start it for the first time. Blush
