prospective 72 owner

hi folks, thanks for having me!
I've recently put my name to a rebuild of a 1972 351 Cobra Jet Th_go_smilie_its_yo_birthday, and I was wondering if anybody could give me any pointers/tips? I'm new to mustangs, and if all goes well with the rebuild, this will be my first.
Is there anything I should check during the rebuild process? its a complete bare shell rebuild for reference.
Can anyone also tell me the rarity of the car? its a '72 Mach 1 351 Cobra Jet, 4 Speed Manual, in Bright blue met. also, can anyone give me any indication of the value of one in fully restored condition?
(Im in the UK)
Thanks in advance!
James

Welcome to the site James...you came to the right place for information on your rebuild! It would be helpful to know your starting point. I know you mentioned a bare shell but is it a bare shell ready to put back together or does it need rust repair and or body panel replacement and bodywork. Please upload some pictures so everyone can get a better understanding of what you are working with as a starting point on this rebuild.

I'm afraid I can't post any pictures as the old girl isn't mine yet. I'm buying the car finished, but as of yet, the rebuild hasn't started. The inner front shell has been replaced (shock turrets, inner wings, engine mounts etc) but the floor pan and boot floor still needs doing. The garage I'm buying it off are going to keep me up to date with pictures, and I'll post them as I get them, and I'll be going to take some of my own on a regular basis.
Just a bit gutted that I can't have it until march Cry

Welcome James,

Get the VIN for the car and buy a full Marti report from Marti Auto Works.

www.martiauto.com or (623) 935-2558

That report will tell you the truth of what you have. It will list every factory detail and will then break it down as to rarity. A bright blue 72 Mach 1 CJ with a 4 speed has to be pretty rare anywhere but especially in the UK!

These cars have notorious cowl rust. A restored car with a rusty cowl would be bad money. They now make replacement cowl panels for these cars. My recommendation would be to insist that the cowl is perfect (not just patched) prior to any other work.

I am excited with you and will look forward to your regular updates!

I'll post the marti report up when I get it, the seller is emailing it through to me this evening.
I must say I'm getting giddy, but don't know how I'll do waiting till March to drive her...

Oh, I see now. I misunderstood you. I was thinking you were going to do the rebuild. Duh Well, you still came to the right place. Looking forward to seeing the "birth record" and statistics on your car. Keep us updated on the progress. And make sure the garage stays within YOUR budget!

We've fixed a price for the rebuild, unless I make any changes to the build spec.
Out of interest, what's a concourse one worth these days?

There is not enough info to answer that question
It is going to depend on the options and quality of the build
It is a plus that it is a CJ / 4 speed car
Do the numbers match ?
You said it is getting the shock towers replaced - are they using new repro or good used towers ?
What are they doing about your VIN on the towers?
Any price info at this time would be a wild guess
Look at some of the auction sales to get an idea
Sound like it will be a nice car - congrats

just got the marti report through for you all to have a nosey at, just looking at the statistics section, does that mean that this car is one of 920? or 1190?
p.s. sorry about the huge resolution. Duh

Yes.

Your car is one of 1,190 ordered with that paint and trim combo.

One of 920 Mach 1 sportsroof ordered through that DSO.

With all the options considered, your specific car's status could possibly be broken down to smaller "one of" numbers.

Plenty of people ordered a 72 Mach 1 Q code with bright blue paint back in the day. How many still exist? How many exist in the UK? Only one will be in your driveway!
