Hey everyone - Very excited to find this site, as i have also had a hard time finding much info on mach 1s. Thanks very much Joe for putting this together!
I don't actually own it yet, but i am taking a 5 hour drive this saturday to go pick up a 1972 project, if all goes as planned. I have been looking for the right start for quite some time now, and i can't wait to get my hands on this one - it needs a lot of work!
Rare pony - yes, this is my first mustang. Last 'real' car was a 98 M3 which i *loved*, and i still have an 86 rx7 to mess around with. I have never been into ford before, except for the mach 1s - I have wanted a 71-72 for as long as i can remember! Just talked with the guy and im headed out to rent the trailer now.
Got it! Some friends helped me pick up the Mach 1 this weekend. Quite an ordeal! It was about a 4.5 hour drive out, 4 hours there, and 5 hours back... Traded it for my 87 Wrangler, It was a looooong day. So this thing needs a lot of work, but i'm very excited to get going on it. Body appears to be in great shape for the most part, straight except for a few obvious bondo spots, but i guess ill see whats under the primer when i get there. newer carpet and headliner (in the front, no liner around back window). I'll probably end up having to replace a lot if the interior panels if i want to make it right. There is currently no engine or transmission in the car, but It came with a 429 (Block # D1VE 3015 AA) and a 289, C6 and AOD transmissions, B+M ratchet shifter, an aluminum driveshaft, traction bars, plumbed for nitrous, line locker, a 4 point roll cage, 17" 1998 cobra wheels, new tires, and a 15g fuel cell in the trunk. Also, a set of C8VE heads, A set of D3VE heads, 2 extra intake manifolds, a manual bellhousing for the 429, and a bunch of other parts i have not had time to check out yet. I am planning on rebuilding most of the car. I have never done most of what i will be doing on this thing, but it will be fun figuring it out!
Are you planning on making it a race car or are you going to restore it to original? Either way the plan is to have fun doing it! Since it is your first experience it should be a blast. There will be times the work will seem hard, you just need to keep in your mind the goal your trying to get to.
Were here to help and we want to see what you do! So keep your camera close by! Congrats I know your excited, when I first got mine in August I couldnt sleep for 3 days afterward!
I'm not really interested in making it original, going restomod. It was a grabber blue 351 2 barrel. I don't know if i will set it up for racing either though, yet. I have never really been interested in 1/4 mile before, but we'll see as i get into this a bit more. I'm basically learning about all of this as i go, so i'll have LOTS of questions for you guys.
