72 Mach 1 restoration

That was some pretty amazingly hidden rust.

Have you checked the cowl?

Great work...keep the pictures coming! Are you planning to blast the areas with the surface rust while it is still accessible or is it contingent on the customer's budget?

All the surface rust will be blasted, the Rear Seat Belt Mount, that is rusted away, has been cut away and a new mount will be re-attached when the floor pan is complete.

Cowl... Do you mean the 2 dinner plate size holes where the heater ducts "should" be. They will be replaced when we start on the frontend. As things stand atm, it's more important to get the rear braced and make the shell moblie.

Yes, that's the spot. I agree with the one area at a time work. It would have been a shame to put the car back together not realizing the "hidden" problems that could fill the new floor with water again.

Great job!

Ah, some REAL restoration work! I just joined the forum and I was starting to worry about you guys. Now THIS is what owning a Mustang is all about! Rust, rust, rust... One of the main reasons why I stopped working on cars and got interested in Harleys. NO rust on them, just an engine and a transmission - my favorite parts!

Of course I missed having a Mustang so I just recently bought a '71 Mach 1. It needs ALL of the same things that this one does, plus a few additional items. Thanks for posting all of these pic's. It's giving me a lot of much needed motivation.

If you have a chance let us know what brand of repair panels / parts that you used and how much "massaging" they needed to fit properly. I haven't bought any parts yet so it would be good to know what works and what doesn't.

Most of the parts came from CJPony, not sure of the cost as the boss did the ordering. door shells trunk floor inner/outer tubs rear quarters front fllor pans, rear panel rear valance, complete screen and door rubber kit all weather trim complete bolt kit, the list goes on. Also due to the customer request no costings will be posted

Juedu2, what are your thoughts on the fitment of the parts you are using?

As the panels are obviously pattern the fit isn't perfect, but on the whole the fit isn't to bad., I'll take some closeups tomorrow.

Fitment looks good from the pics. I have been pretty lucky with aftermarket panel fitment on my car. The one piece floor need some tweaking to get right but otherwise its been pretty good (knock on wood)

Looks Like the Boss has ordered new rear rails too, oh well more de-reconstruction....lol

The rear floor wasn't too bad Mike, It had only rotted out around the rear tubs. As previous pictures show, the front pans were worst, and, Steven, i'll get to the non- existant cowls later....:)
