I am moving to Virginia.

The Army decided that I should move to Virginia (Ft. Eustis near Newport News). I have a report date of 10 October. So I will be there for about the next 3-4 years of my career. Only been there twice and both times were for Army training and they were both short. Just curious if anyone is around there or has been. I keep hearing from a lot of my fellow comrades that VA beach is the place to be. I am just curious what else I should be looking forward to.

Never lived in Virginia and only visited a few times but I have enjoyed those short visits. My sister's family lived in the Newport News area during her husband's Army career as well. They enjoyed there time there and I enjoyed visiting the area.

Hopefully someone with more knowledge can pipe in and give you more help.

I am a Navy veteran and I was stationed at Barbers Point Hawaii. The island was very small, with a very close knit Polynesian culture, and the military was not especially embraced by the locals. I quickly caught "rock fever" and could not wait to get back to the mainland. With that said, I would have paid a million dollars to be stationed in Virginia.

Although I am from Connecticut, I have been to Virginia and this is what I know:

Lots of Military Bases
Great Beaches
Good Fishing

Close to many attractions including:
Pentagon
Arlington National Cemetery

I am sure you will enjoy this area and thank you for your service to our country as we celebrate Memorial day to honor our veterans...

Thank you all. I am looking forward to the move. Unfortunately looks like the wife and I are splitting up in the process. So the move is going to be a solo one. I will definitely try to bug anyone and everyone that is around me for a simple meet up and drive possibly.

Man sorry to hear about the split. After 31 years of marriage (to the same woman). All I can say is, if you work as hard, or sometimes harder, at keeping her as you did getting her???? If you still love her? Work at it! After 31 years, I don't know the meaning of the word QUIT!. If it's tough I'll do it right now, if it's impossible it will take just a little bit longer! God be with you my freind. Thmbsup JTS 71 Mach1

I live in Warrenton Virginia about 50 miles from Washington DC. It's about a 3 hour drive to Fort Eustis from here.

Lots of things to do in Virginia. Virginia Beach is one of the nicer beach towns. I hear the police are tough there and try to keep it family oriented. Fort Eustis is close to Historic Williamsburg and the them park and brewery Bush Gardens. Just a few hours drive from Ft. Eustis will put you in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains. A lot of history here too such as Jamestown and a lot of Civil War history so Virginia has a lot to offer. I've lived here my whole life so I'm a little biased.

My wife and I are headed down to Williamsburg this weekend for our anniversary getaway. A lot of shopping outlets and antique malls!

Sorry to hear hear about the break-up with your wife, been there-done-done-that. But I was lucky to find a great wife the second time around. Good luck with your move.
