70 mach one project continues
#1
I though i would start a new thread aside from my engine issue one and include a few pics of my work.I am guilty of getting busy and not taking the time to post pics but decided to do so today. Here goes.
The car looked fine when i bought it but I know how that goes.I am very pleased with how little rust I have found.I was only going to go so far with the tear down but some of us know how that goes.I decided to leave no stone unturned and fix every possible thing and rust I could find now and be done with it for good. The pics are in no particular order Dodgy but you will get the idea.I have also removed the tank and other work. The front suspension will remain on the car for now and the headliner will remain also since it is very good and nice and tigght and i do not want to deal with it and the insulation and metal are like new when i peeled the liner back to peak up in there.Even with the engine issue and the small amount of rust i am still pleased with my purchase and project and am expecting to do my final metal work and rust protection this week and then onto sound deadner, detailing and assembly...YEAH...
Thanks for looking
The metal patch on the black background is for the inner wheel whell where it meats the inside floor. The area wher the seem was spit has been rust converted/pinched back together/welded inside and under the car AND a brace stitch welded to add strength I used stick so i could get something in behind it to rust proof AFTER the welding and any time i want to in the future.I used vise grip clamps underneath to re-pinch the seals and then spot welded the joints and the pices went back to where they had been factory joined. Here is one pre patch. The area they beat in for tire clearance laid back down really nice and although not pretty will provide more protection and strength than new.

I WOULD SAY THAT IS A REALLY SOLID CAR YOU GOT. GLAD TO HEAR YOU ARE HAPPY WITH YOUR PURCHASE. THAT ALWAYS MAKES IT EASIER TO SPEND MORE MONEY ON IT BECAUSE YOU ARE NEVER TOTALLY DONE WITH THEM. Clap_

Looks like you are having a great go at it and it is going well.

Glad to see it is so clean and to hear that you are happy with what you have found. Too often the story is the opposite.

Thank you for sharing.

I especially like your attention to the small details. Good job.

Are you planning to incorporate some (POR-15) chassis coatings into your plans?

Are you using the 93% zinc primer over your raw steel patches?

The paint job looks fantastic. I wish that my power steering components were in as good a shape as yours.Biggrin

Thanks guys.I am going to take it outside on the next fine saturday and do some blasting.I have a product similar to POR 15 made by magnet paint called chassis safer i plan to use on some spots but am leaning toward the Epoxy primer over the scuffed up metal.I have rust converter also and depending on who you listen to many say the EP will stand up as well or better than some of the "miracle " rust stopping products like chassis saver and POR 15.
When i get there i will be using a couple different products in different area's.
My PS valve is a rebuilt unit with new hoses last august.it will be cleaned up and detailed. It is not on the car any longer .The paint is actaully faded really bad and some minor chips.I had a guy out to look at it and he guaranteed he could bring it back better than new.We will see.I was all smiles when he sid not to paint it and it would cost 25,000 dollars to get the same job done in our best local shop due to all the processes involved to do a "candy" paint.
The engine bay can be painted after i blast some and clean up my mess.Fingers crossed for this Saturday for blasting.Only a high of 34 but not calling for rain.
I will keep you guys posted. It's going well.I installed ball bearing clutch kit today and painted all the pedal assembly components.
I have other stuff painted and a bunch of stuff repaired and ready for assembly.I am looking forward to getting the inside done and re-assembly.
Terry
I only spotted this one on the inside and outside which a fair bit more than original and spotted the wheel well /floor seam .My thinking is now i can seam seal underneath but still be able to keep the space between this patch and the wheel well rust proofed. It rusted because some had pathed it before and water got between the patch .I will do my best to keep that from happening.
I am still deciding to try and seal the wheel opening lips with the wheel well or leave them Unsealed where they meet and periodocialy rust proof them from the inside of the trunk or behind the 1/4 trim.
If you seal them and water condensation gets in we know what can happen. If you do not seal them you get a little water inside the car but it would be oiled/ rust proofed.
I will figure that out in time.
Thanks for looking guys.
Terry

After many hours of sandblasting and just as many vacuuming and blowing out sand and vacuuming again and again and again etc....
Here is the floors done two thick coats with chassis saver and the engine bay ready for paint.I have one coat on the engine bay since these pics.23_30_106

I do have some brush lines but wanted to use a brush and get it on thick and forced into any cracks .Most of the black inside gets covered with fat mat/factory sound deadner and insulation.I am pretty fussy/anal but am over all happy. All the rear area inside the car is scuffed and am trying to decide what to use to protect/paint it with.
The chassis saver did not turn out as well as i had hoped and am hesitant to use it where it will be visible.
Thanks for looking.
Terry

Great looking work on a VERY solid car. One question, what happens if you have the urge to immediately take a nap, the bed is covered with parts! Just kidding, keep up the pro-quality work!
Good luck,
Keith
