Spark plug gap
#1
I just changed the points and condenser to one of those electronic replacement things. I also put a 45000 volt coil at the same time. I did not see any performance improvement. Just wondering if I should increase the spark plug gap since the higher voltage. Anyone know? Thanks in advance.

Performance gains with with these trigger wheel set-ups are practically negligible. They're designed to increase reliability as they don't need any adjustments. GXR

Just a suggestion, about .045" should put you in the ballpark as far as gap goes. thats roughly what the early electronic ignition systems ran when they came out in the 70's. Didn't your replacement ignitor come with any specs, settings? As GXR stated these upgrades were definetly for reliability. More then performance. JTS 71 Mach1

Thanks. I did not see any setting specs for the plugs, just the pint replacement thing.

The most obvious performance gains will be noticed as you approach redline. The breaker points tend to cut out above 5000rpm. To avoid this the factory equipped some performance engines with dual point distributors, The main reason however, that people like those Petronix type units is reliability,(while retaining a stock appearance). If you are messing with the dist. anyway, have you considered changing the advance weights & springs? Just an idea for a little cheap extra H.P.
