Cobra Steering Wheel??
#1
I am seeking assistance in identifying this wheel as an original or after-market Cobra wheel. I have not had much luck in finding sufficient information on this wheel to determine what I actually have here.

Here is what I do know: I found this wheel on Craigslist about 3 years ago. The person who I bought it from said he found it at an estate sale.

The wheel measures 15 inches but I believe the Cobra wheels were 16 inches. There are no manufacturer markings on either side of this wheel. However, I did learn the early Cobra/Shelby wheels made by Moto Lita had no markings either. This wheel does have a layered wood finish to it. Researching on the internet I read a posting somewhere that steering wheels with the layered wood finishes were originals...who knows. Overall, this wheel does not show any significant signs of aging for 45+ years old.

If there is anyone out there who has any knowledge about these wheels I would appreciate any feedback you can provide me. I was never looking for an original wheel just happen to stumble accross this one. If this is an after market wheel, I won't be disappointed at all because I think it is pretty cool especially since it surprisingly very light.

I agree Mike - pretty cool.

Sorry - can't help with the identification. Anyone else?

I have decided to send an e-mail directly to to Moto-Lita. I will let you now when I hear back.

That should answer any doubt to its authenticity.

I will be interested to hear what you find out.

I have some good news. Moto-Lita did confirm this is one of their wheels, however, they did not let me know the period it may be from. From what I learned about Moto-Lita wheels is they did not start marking their wheels until sometime in the late 70's early 80's. I resubmitted my question to them in search of this answer. So right now it's possible this wheel is a pre-1980 Moto-Lita wheel. Hopefully, I can get a more concise time period.

Well, here is Moto-Lita's response to my question regarding when the wheel may have been produced:

"Thank you for your email. We cannot tell when the wheel was made. Customers can and some do request no markings on the wheel when they purchase."

So, unless someone had requested this wheel with no markings on it, and based on my research with the company, is it fair for me to assume this is an early Moto-Lita Wheel?

Warning: Comments and Opinions on this wheel are highly encouraged!!

Interesting.

I like the look and was looking for something like that for my 73 Mach 1 but ended up going with the factory three spoke.
