A 72 CJ would have open chamber heads

4 Heads, a pair of each style, open and closed chambers came with the block. The open chamber heads with screw-in studs and guideplates.

I'm just wondering about some details:
I've read in literature, that all 351 cleveland blocks with cast "D2AE-CA" should come with 4 bolt mains.
One of my blocks doesn't.
Cast "D2AE-CA" and "1K4" is found but also 2 bolt mains!
Is this regular and the literature quotes wrong?
Best regards
Frank
Open heads with screw in studs IF ORIGINAL would have been 72 r code HO heads - but usually someone modified them
Ford mixed and match motor parts [ blocks ] to keep the line moving
People have found 2 bolt mains in Q code mustangs
Have also found 4 bolt mains in H code torinos and even station wagons.
Yes that is all true. As far as 4 bolt mains go the fact of the matter is no year or style guaranteed you the 4 bolt main block. Sad but true. Ford indiscriminately used 2 or 4 bolt main blocks depending upon what was available at the time and on the line. Those that are supposed to have the 4 bolt main option have a better than average chance to have the correct block but it is not a guarantee. I have taken apart countless original engines and rebuilt them and it can go either way 2 bolt or 4 bolt. The same thing goes on the cars that were supposed to have 2 bolt mains. I have done 2 2bbl carb clevelands that had the 4 bolt blocks and they were very original and documented cars. Unless you are bent on having an exact match I would not be two concerned. As far as strength goes unless you are building a monster the 2 bolt main blocks are more than strong enough. I am at work now but If you still want I think one of the books I have would decode your pieces. Just let me know.

They gave me the Ford web site that list all casting numbers on their blocks, heads, etc....Mine was a D2AE-CA 26E and it was a 4 bolts main and their chart showed it was the same block used in 72 for the CJ, Boss and HO motors..What made the difference was the heads and internals....and being a 4bolt.....I hope this helped you....Kelly
Do you still have the web address for the site where you got the info? I would be interested since when researching a project you can never have too many sources of information. Sometimes it takes 2 or 3 places until you can piece together the story by bits here and there. Thanks
