71-72 Mach 1 Emmisions Decal
#1
Im in the process of cleaning up the cowl/firewall on my Mach 1.

Since I didnt want to paint around the emissions decal I just took it off thinking that I would just buy a new one, but with research Im only seeing I can get this decal in a sort of GRAY color.

But as you see in the photo below mine is orange.

Is this the correct decal and does anyone know where I can get the orange colored one?

After a little more research Im finding one that says it is yellow

EMISSION DECAL EARLY 72 351C-2V COUGAR & MONTEGO

Emission Decal (Yellow) For Early 1972 351C-2V W/Automatic Cougar & Montego.

Placed on air cleaner snorkel of RH valve cover. 4" x 2", white with blue print.

Printed on this decal:
Idle Setting & Ignition Timing
Ford Part Number D2AE-9C485-DA

Can anyone shed some light on this so I can get the one thats correct?

I even found this one but it is not exactly the same as what mine had, the lettering is different.

EMISSION DECAL LATE 72 351C-2V AT/MT FORD/MERCURY

Emission Decal for Late 1972 351C-2V with Auto/Manual Trans. Ford & Mercury Vehicles.

Placed on the air cleaner snorkel or RH valve cover, this self-adhesive 4-1/2" x 3" orange vinyl decal has black print.

Printed on this decal:
Idle Setting & Ignition Timing
Ford Part Number D2AE-9C485-HA
"This vehicle has an approved Fuel Evaporative and E.M. Exhaust Emission Control System. This vehicle conforms to U.S. E.P.A. and Californmia Regulations applicable to 1972 model year new motor vehicles."

These replacements also have decal placement as "Placed on air cleaner snorkel of RH valve cover."
But mine is on the cowl/firewall passenger side panel.

Anyone got any answers? Confused

the one on my car is actually a white color...but it was possibly yellow originally just faded now.

The decals were different colors depending on the year of the vehicle and also what engine-trans combo the vehicle had. Also a factor was the vehicles' emissions equipment. Most of the stickers were located on the driver's side valve cover, but I have seen originals affixed to the cowl such as yours. I believe (and don't quote me on this) there was an issue raised about the valve cover location making the decal difficult for Ford technicians to read when the vehicles were dealer-serviced, and in 1972, Ford moved the decal location to the cowl. Correct decal location also depends on which assembly plant your vehicle was built at. This also holds true for "buck" tags. My buck tag was screwed to the right side of the radiator support in a reasonably accessible location. My buddy's car (same year and assembly plant) was screwed to the radiator support behind the right headlight bucket and was all-but-impossible to see. You have to understand that as these vehicles passed down an assembly line, some worker might be in a rush and just plop the sticker where it's most convienient. I'm sure the sticker police weren't called if someone noticed a decal either upside down or in the wrong location - we're talking production here. As far as decal availability goes, Mustangs Unlimited has an enormous variety and should be able to hook you up with the correct decal. A lot of mustangs are modified from original anyway (ignition boxes, aftermarket intakes, exhaust, air cleaners, valve covers etc.... obviously, guys with mods like these shouldn't be critical of a correct decal. But, if you're going all-original, your best bet would be Mustangs Unlimited.

Correct placement for the sticker is on the passanger side cowl. I have examined many 71 - 73 cars in preparing for the restoration of mine and they have been in the same location for that sticker. There is also a smaller more metallic like sticker that was affixed to the drivers side valve cover, but it mainly contained timing information. I would go with the recommended Marti Works for sourcing your sticker. The strive for originality.

It is available from Jim Osborn reproductions under part number DF-0594. It goes on the cowl for sure! Other restoration houses sell Osborn products as well.

Good Luck,
