18" fan on 351W
#1
In my efforts to fix the overheating problem on my '70 Mach 1 I'm replacing a 17" direct drive fan that's pretty beat up and chipped. I ordered an 18" fan and clutch thinking that the bit of extra fan size would help (and the sales person I spoke to said that was the correct factory size). Well, the fan fits inside my fan shroud (24" on a 351W) but there's only about 1/2" clearance all around. Is that enough space or will the fan wobble enough to clip the sides of the shroud?

I was thinking of putting it in and just seeing what happens. If I do it quickly then perhaps the shroud would just get a few scratches. But, if I bolt in the fan it's going to get pretty scratched up just from the bolts/washers so then I wouldn't be able to return it. So anyone have an 18" fan with the 24" shroud on a 351?

In case someone else comes across this.....I did some more investigating (i.e. I put the fan in the car) and found it's not going to work. If the fan and shroud sat dead center of each other there would be enough clearance I think but they don't so the fan hits one edge of the shroud. Lesson learned, measure before buying. :)

17" fan is on it's way.

Thank you for the answer to your own question.

Sorry that I did not have an answer for you.

At least others will know.

Seems to me I remember reading some where 1" clearance and just inside of shoud towards radiator as to draw the air through the radiator.
