Was installing a new camshaft in my 72 mustang and i think there is to much side play. The motor is a 351 2v. When i pulled out the old cam there wasnt any spacers or anything. Is it normal to have like a 1/8th in play front to back without the timing chain and gears on. If not how do i fix this. A friend told me u adjust the gap with the freeze plug in the back of the block but that doesnt sound right to me.

The camshaft thrust plate is installed/ bolted, on the front of the block after the cam has been installed. Then you install the timming gears when you tighten the upper gear, it tightens against the thrust plate and pulls the cam against the back of the gear and the thrust plate. Thus setting the thrust clearence. You definetly don't set the clearence with the rear freeze plug! JTS 71 Mach1

Thanks for the great help Jack.
That is the purpose of the thrust plate. It just seems really odd before it all goes together.

Yeah it does seem odd. But it sure works better then the cam buttons they used to use on Chevys, that just pushed against the front cover. JTS 71 Mach1

Thank you. It does seem od to have that much play but id rather make sure its normal instead of putting it all together just to rip it apart. And the freeze plug idea just didnt seem right.
