Power Steering Pump Aftermarket
#1
Hey Boys and girls, K heres the deal, I have put a 393 stroker in my 69 I have a aluminum rad with dual electric fans.I used a March serpentine belt pulley system. All is tight but fits in until I mount my power steering pump. It conflicts with one of my electric fan motors.So...I need to move my power steering pump back to clear the fan motor and catch the inside pulley of my March serpentine belt system. Here is the kicker the pump is about half inch to wide , it hits the head, Can I use a newer style that is narrower, like the one with the plastic reservoir off a newer ford, will the pressure work? Or an after market one ( March pump model 9600) my concern is how do you know the volume and pressure that will work? Hope I have not lost you in this mess. Thanks

Geeezzzz. You said a mouthful. in all the years I've done this. I can't remember seeing the pressures, or volume of a power steering pump listed anywhere, not in manuals tech bulletins or anything I can think of. I'm sure they are somewhere ?????? My advice is to find a ford pump with the small plastic housing from a early 80's Ford like a Granada, as it used a steering box and not a rack and pinion. The pumps for rack and pinion could have different pressures and flow rates. The 69 used a slave cylinder style system mounted to the steering linkage. But they used the same pumps as all the other Ford cars that had the power steering in the steering box itself. So they would have had to have the same pressure and flow rates. When you go to the parts store they don't have any listing for pressure they simply give you a pump for that year and model car. I know I didn't quite answer your question but I hope it helps.
