center console
#1
According to my Marti report my 73 came with a center console. My question is: How was the console mounted to the hump? The carpet has been replaced and I don't know what the attachment method was or if there are mounting holes or weld nuts under the carpet. I considered sheet metal screws but I'd rather not add extra holes in the floor unless I have to.
Thanks, guys.

Your console was secured by tapered interior trim screws approx. one and a quarter inch long. There should be holes in the tunnel (floor) where these used to be. The best way to do this would be to position the console where it belongs and run an ice pick down through the console mounting holes, and probe until you find each hole. This can be tedious and you might want to just drill new holes. I beleive there was a thread on this very issue some time ago, so you may want to check the archives (past posts). When drilling through the carpet, I always set the drill to reverse so the carpet doesn't spool up on the drill bit.

GXR is absolutely right.

An alternative would be to locate the holes from under the car.

Take an awl and run from the bottom up. Be careful of the seats. If you heat the awl it will sear the carpet leaving the hole open and not apt to pull a run in the carpet while screwing the console down.

If you locate the factory hole but they seem to be wore bigger, take a ballpean hammer and with another backing hammer close the holes back down to size with a few taps.

Thanks again, guys. That's exactly what I needed to know.

I had a hard time finding the old holes after replacing my carpet. I used the ice pick method. Just be patient.
