Drive Shaft Yoke
#1
My drive shaft yoke seems to be very sloopy where it goes onto the tail shaft of the transmisson. I know there should be some loosness , but I can actualy wiggle it when it's all the way on the tail shaft . Is that normal ?

I have a vibration at about 60 mph , and it seems to be comming from that area.

Sounds like the trans. tailshaft bushing may be shot. Fairly common.

GXR is on the right track. But the vibration is what causes premature wear of the tailshaft bushing. Definetly replace the bushing, if the vibration doesn't go away completely. Look for a tight/worn Ujoint, bad yoke, or bent driveshaft. I fought a mild vibration for several months in my Ranger. it was mild just enough to buzz the stick. (5spd) It also wore out the tailshaft bushing. Which I replaced, and it helped but i still had a mild vibration at about 60mph. I changed Ujoints, tried a different brand. It just about drove me nuts. Hairpull I finally swapped driveshafts. (I ran a salvage yard at the time) NO More Vibration. Thumbup I couldn't for the life of me figure out what had happened. I laid the driveshaft across 2 saw horses and it was bent! then I remembered my wife was pulling the Ranger out of the shop and caught a large rock that had been there for ever, and it got shoved under the truck and put a tiny dent in the driveshaft about the size of a nickle. I couldn't believe that little bump had bent the driveshaft, Headscratch but it was plain as day. The little dent was exactly where it was bent. So it doesn't take much to bend one believe me. Hope this helps. JTS 71 Mach1

I had a vibration in my 70 Mach 1 turned out to be a bad rear u-joint.( I had bought @ AutoZone ) I don't have very good luck with their products SCo_hmmthink Anyway put in a new joint( I bought @ NAPA) vibration gone hope this helps.

Well , I havbe checked the U joints , they are ok. I guess I will have to do some more investagation. The interesting this is , This started aftre I removed the engine and tranny for a complete detailing od engine compartemnt and engine replacement. I did take and clean up the tranny & paint it ( FMX ) and nothing else . so not sure what happened.

only 3 things can cause this vibration 1) bent driveshaft 2) defective u-joint 3) tailshaft bushings aka. (Spragues) wore out. mine would do the same as yours get to 60mph and it would vibrate right down the center of the car, my u-joints were only 7-8 months in the car. I pulled the driveshaft to check to see if it was bent and to replace the trans mount, I found that the rear u-joint was tight one way and loose the other. I replaced both u-joints and the problem went away...just a thoughtSCo_hmmthink

Try taking the driveline loose from the rear end and rotating it 180 degrees and re-install. I've done this with varying degrees of luck. Might work.... this is assuming you've checked all the other possibilities listed and ruled them out!

This whole thread started when the original poster stated that the driveshaft was sloppy where the yoke went into the trans. That should probably be addressed first.

Yes thats right , I still haven't addressed this issue . Been so busy with house completion and work . But now this wk end will be the first car show for us up here . so I am not sure I'll get too this before then . Sooner or later I had better deal with this issue.

Yes, but it was also stated that the problem "started" after removing the engine and tranny and then reinstalling......If you don't mark the drive shaft befor removing it's possible that being 180 degrees off the original position is causing the problem since nothing else was changed.... I'm assuming. UNLESS, motor mounts, tranny mounts or something else was changed which affected the geometry of the drive line. I have had a "lot" of movement there on some of the cars I've put together in the past as well, with no vibration and no leaking from the seal either. Just letting people know some of the stuff I have ran across over the years.....the amount of movement is difficult to know without being there, it's all relative to the observer.

It's quite possible rotating it 180 deg won't help a bit......but it sure doesn't take long to find out! Rolleyes
