I've got a 72 Mach1 with a 351cj. The engine has a cracked cylinder that maybe be sleevable or not. Is there a number stamped on the block that links that exact engine to that car. I'm thinking the block number (if it exists) would correlate in someway to the vehicle 's VIN #. If there is such a number, where would it be on the block. I want to keep this Mach1 as original as possible.
Thanks to anyone who can heip,
Keith

Yes, a partial serial is on the back of the cars original block. It is hand stamped and I believe is the last six numbers of the serial.

I took pictures of mine to share but the number is almost impossible to read by eye out of the car and therefore did not show up in the picture. It is on the driver's side on a milled spot just under the head.

If its cracked then just replace it with another Cleveland and dont worry about those serial numbers as according to the last 5 years at the barrat auto auctions posted numbers on types of cars and prices. The concours restorations garnish some good cash but the really nice restomods garnish all the big cash.

I would personally just make it as correct as possible without jeapordizing longevity with sleves.

Personally I would just go one step farther by installation an original cobrajet 4 bolt main block with early 1970 closed chambered high compression heads for a dominating bit of real good horsepower.

As far as I know it. Replacement of components like this with superior components will actually increase the value.
Like say going from a 351 Windsor engine .....up to a 351 Cleveland engine....or up to a 428 CJ engine ...or installing even an aftermarket Boss 429 engine in a car such as that increases the value if kept within the original racing heritage lineup of engines that were available on cars such as yours....
Like the Ford (429CJ) for your car....It raises the value even if your car didnt come with it originally...others like yours did.

That 72 mustang has alot of room under that hood.Awes

Others please feel free to add or make comments on this subject.

Numbers matching value depends on the car
What is is and condition

If it's a loaded low mile, 72 Q code Mach 1 - I think matching numbers would help.

The restomods that bring good money have way more than just a different engine

I agree with Master on these two points

I should have a 4 bolt D2 block if you decide to replace it.

Sleeve it, why get another block, probably 200 bucks to sleeve it, and it will probably out last you.

There is no way that sleeving a block can only cost 200 dollars.
The rebuild gaskets, bearings and rings alone are way more than that.

1st of all you would need to take it completely apart down to the bare block.
Next you would have to take it to a reputable shop with a kiln that can fuse the sleeve into the block properly. Any other way is doing it half assed. Once this is done it would then have to be line bored and resurfaced. This is the proper way to do it (Period).

There is an old saying: Do it right the first time and you will never have to re-lick the wounds from messing it up.

I would just get the block from ohio mustang and have the piece of mind in your investment.

Buy the way: How much is that 4 bolt main CJ Block (Ohio Mustang...??)SCo_hmmthink

I had a 302 that I had to have a sleeve put in and its still in the motor with no problems. That was about 12 years ago. It wasnt very expensive and any decent machine shop can do it easily. I believe they get bored out then its a press fit for the sleeve. Then they bore the new sleeve to match the rest of the motor.

Yep thats the way I've seen it done. I'm sure there are other ways and if your building a guzillion bucks motor it might be worth it. But in the real world. I have had everything from 14 hp kohlers all kinds of motorcycles and atv's to many ford, chevy's, and even a dodge sleeved and they never failed. At least not because of the sleeve. JTS 71 Mach1
