What's One More Iron In The Fire!
#1
My fifth child is getting ready to leave home and go away to college to North Dakota this fall. As parents we decided that the 67 Ranchero was probably not the choice of vehicle for her in that it gets COLD up there and they get a lot of that white stuff.

So we went shopping a couple of months ago. It started with looking at some SUV's but my daughter saw this 88 Ford Ranger and chose it. Cosmetics will follow but the first attack was to reseal the complete motor replacing things like the timing chain, etc. along the way.

I don't think I have ever worked on a more oily/dirty motor! (And I have seen my share). Anyway today my daughter and I were able to get the motor out so we can start to clean the truck up, reseal the motor and put it all back together.

What a task.

I think it is great that you and your daughter are working together on the project. Not many teens would be willing to do that for a collage car.

I don't ever plan on her doing her own wrenching but she will be knowledgeable of various parts and have a understanding of function. She stays right with me asking questions on what things are and their purpose.

Looks like your staying busy! If she is going to be helping you maybe you should at least buy her some of those disposable mechanics gloves so she dosen't get her nails too dirty. Biggrin

Hey Steven sounds like you got a great girl there. At least learning the basics, she won't be fooled by the first grease monkey, that says she needs a metric cresent wrench to tighten her lug nuts. If you know what I mean. Nice choice on the 88 ranger with the 2.9 its a great little truck. I have an 87 2wd long bed with 360,486 miles and still counting when I put the 3rd clutch in it! If you need some knowledge on the little engine just holler. JTS 71 Mach1

Thanks JTS71.

Todays effort was the first clean of the motor and engine bay. I have never seen a motor with more dirt on the outside! We sprayed it off and are soaking it with Simple Green for a blast in a few more days.

Yeah, well I got all of it off me (I think).

The motor still needs more work. Anyone have a good tip of some everyday household cleaner that will cut some very tough baked on grease?

Goop or some other hand cleaner??? Rubbed on and let it soak? I'm sure you already tried kerosene/diesel? Obviuosly you have limited availability on supplies? JTS 71 Mach1
