73' Mach 1
#1
Hi everyone. I'm new to the whole Mach 1 scene. I love Mustangs especially the older ones. I bought the one I have the first week of Sept of this year. She ran great when we bought her, but on my drive home somehow the engine screwed up. No loud noises outside of the normal loud headers. Now I'm trying to get her running again. I'm hoping this website will help me out. I'm in WA state btw.

Welcome to the site! Sorry to hear your motors running rough but you'll get it together soon enough! Looks great!

Great looking Mach! Sorry to hear you are having problems. If you post up some of the symptoms of what happened you will probably get some good advice here! Looking forward to hearing more from you.

Welcome Wrangler.

That is a nice looking car.

As mentioned by Rare Pony, we would be more than happy to help diagnosis your car's engine issues with some symptoms shared.

So is this your first Mach 1? Have you owned the 71/73 body style before?

Nope. This is my first stang period. My dad and I used to talk about buying an old Mustang many years ago but we never got to it. There was a guy up the road from me when I was in HS that restored 60's model mustangs in his garage alone. They were awesome. As far as my symptoms for Fiona, (the name we gave her), ran great on our test drives but they were short distances. When I was driving her home, about 2 hrs into my 4 hr trip, she belched a cloud of smoke (not sure the color of smoke) then immediately lost power and she died. Tried replacing the starter solenoid. I will post pics of the dmg. The heads are currently removed as a friend of mine and I thought we just needed to replace the head gasket. Turned out to be worse than expected.

There is hope for Fiona!

As I started reading my first thought was timing chain/sprocket (not knowing of course if the car was running hot). Evidently though if the damage is worse than first thought, it sounds as if you have encountered piston melt down when you removed the heads. Possibly a combination of heat and running very lean.

All just jumping to conclusions so we will wait for the pictures and more explanation.

No bother - Fiona will live again and be stronger for it!
