Hello All,
I'm very new to the Mach 1 world and at present I do not own one. That being said I am a long time fan of the (late 60's early 70's) and am getting geared up to start a project car and since I'm not independently wealthy, I figured restoring a Classic Mach 1 is just the thing to put me in financial ruin!
I see that there is a wealth of information on this forum and I look forward to any advice, tips, warnings and tricks from fellow members.
Thanks for letting me join this select group and I'm sure I will provide much comic relief in my Mach project endeavors for many years to come!

Welcome Eric,
Ah - the bliss of financial ruin. Definitely, Mach 1 restoration is the most enjoyable way to get there.
What are your specific desires. I own and love the 71-73 Mach 1 but was a 69 owner prior to that. I just visited a Mustang owner yesterday that has some twenty+ Mustangs. It was like a field trip for me!
Most were project worthy cars from here in the southwest. I would suggest that unless you have a car that has a sentimental attachment or you are an avid welder to look for a south-western car that has no rust and spend your time and money on the other replaceable parts. Better to lay out cash at the front and even pay some shipping than to replace every panel.
Just my take on it, I'll let the others jump in and trash my opinion.
Let us know how we can help. We will definitely fuel your fire.

Hiya Steve,
And thanks for the reply, I too favor the 71-73 years. As for your advice on the condition of the body, it confirms what I have been told by others that have done restorations, that the least rust or body work needed is a top consideration when purchasing your project.
Do you have any info on the best places to look for projects? I have watched Ebay and Craigslist but was hoping for any other places to consider. Also being a newbie, what are red flags to look out for when considering a purchase? What are first items (other than body) that should be checked out? Which are the items that are commonly mis-represented in the 71-73 years by either ill-informed or devious sellers?
All information is welcome and truly appreciated!
Thx!
Eric

Craigslist seems to be the best source available to look for the cars. Let us know what you are really after, how much you hope to get one for and when you will be ready to look and we are all about trying to be a help.
The worst and hardest repair on 71/73's will be cowl rust. Try to avoid it at all cost. Biggest misrepresentation by seller would be a fastback car as a Mach 1. Make sure your VIN's match. The title VIN with the dash VIN with the fender apron VIN. From there it is a matter of getting the options that you want: motor, transmission, interior appointments, etc.

Welcome to the site from Virginia. This site is a great place to hang out if your looking for resources to find and restore an early Mach 1 or discuss your late model Mach.
As a general rule Steven is probably right about finding the rust-free ones in the southwest, but they are out there everywhere if you find one that has been garage kept and well treated over the years. My personal opinion is to find one with a good body and not worry about the condition of the mechanical condition as IMHO the mechanics are easier and lest costly to fix. Not so much as a misrepresentation, but when buying one don't always believe it if represented as all original. I've seen too many on eBay or elsewhere where you can see changes from original, not to say these are not nice cars, but if your looking for 100% originality, do your homework here and ask plenty of questions. Also, no such thing as a Mach 1 Convertible. There are some great Mach 1 Convertible tribute cars out there, but they were not factory.
Good luck with your search and no such thing as a dumb question here.
