Back in 1985 I picked up a partial seal in my oil pump and locked it up. So yes, you want to remove the pieces from the pan.
That was on a 1970 Torino but it shouldn't be much different on a Mach 1. I ended up having to jack the motor up just a bit to slip the pan out but it was not what I would consider extremely difficult or a real pain.

Just like steven said my 71 mach1 did exactly the same thing. I found pieces of the stem seals during an oil change. I dropped the pan and had to pull the bolts out of both motor mounts and raise the engine roughly 3 to 4 inches to get the pan to clear the frame. (351 Cleveland) Cleaned it all out. It wasn't until the second time that I blew the engine. Even after cleaning them out. There were more pieces, and locked up the pump at 70 MPH didn't take long and boom boom boom. then it went Ka nock Ka nock Ka nock, until the broken connecting rod got pointed straight up and it hit the cam and broke it into several pieces. which is when it rolled to a stop! So be damn sure to clean out the area under the valve covers the drain back holes at the corners of the heads. the valley under the intake, and the oil pan. Oh don't forget the oil pump screen if you reuse the pump! JTS 71 Mach1
