Any help with Rear glass question?
#1
Hello all I am a new member out of Wichita KS. I have a 69 Mach 1 that I am in the final stages of having restored, new full quarters etc.

Saturday I decided to tackle installing the rear glass. After reading a lot of good info on the net I decided to do it. I had the brand new seal by Scott Drake an I installed the new clips first etc. I used the rope method recommended and it worked awesome. I used 3m Weatherstripping adhesive inside the glass lip seal and inside the seal that seals around the inside. I then filled the gap around the glass seal and body after I installed the glass. I then fought with the chrome trim and it all seemed to work out pretty good. However, 3 days later tonight I decided to rinse it off and make sure I had no leaks, well each bottom corner leaks pretty good. With that said any ideas where I went wrong? Did I use the wrong adhesive? It was from Oreillys and the part number was like 83011 or 8 something. Any advice is appreciated.
Thanks,
Shane

Welcome Knobby,

Glad to have you here with us.

I am not sure what to tell you on your rear window seal issue. Someone with that experience should be along shortly. I would try to determine more exactly where the cause of the leak is and try to insert more sealant in that specific area.

The rear window is a troublesome leak area although it can and must be sealed somehow.

Good to have you with us.

Welcome to the site Shane! You've actually tackled something I never have. I know that rear window has to be a "pita"!

My advise don't get it wet! 23_30_106
Sorry I know that doesn't help....

You should shoot up some photos!

Can anyone help this guy??

I used to build high end glass at Serious Materials (windows).

I am thinking that you may not have cleaned the glass properly before mounting it (Denatured alcohol) Duh and you may have put your pucky on and waited too long before sticking it (Dried the adhesive too long).Duh

Just a thought. "Rent a set of suction cups from a glass shop"
It will make the job much easier.

I know it makes you crazy but you will not sleep well knowing it leaks.

Try it again......:

Hello all,

I think I have it figured out, I called Kansas Classics today and they specialize in old Mustangs. Anyway he said I needed to use 3M Bedding & Glazing Compound part # 08509. I also bought it from a reputable glass company in town. Said if there is a leak passage this stuff will seal it. I will let you know.

Thanks again,

Shane

Shane let us know how you get on with the rear glass installation.

If you can take some pictures and post them that would be appreciated by all who pass this way behind you. Thanks.

I put mine in today, no problem at all. I did it just like the instructions I posted. I see no way it can leak. I'll test it in a few days and post results.
