I replaced the starter Solenoid and voltage regulator. I was careful to replace the same connections but now when I start the car, it wont shut off with the key.
Also, the jumper cables were smoking hot when I tried to disconnect them.
Fortunately removing the cables turned off the engine...
Any ideas?

Double check your wiring.
On the solenoid:
Post nearest the battery is feed from battery.
First small connection, closest to battery is coil wire.
Second small connection, farthest from batter is ignition wire.
Post opposite battery is cable to starter.

I had this problem way back in the early 90's with my 73 Mustang Convertible. To the best of my memory, it was the starter solonoid next to the battery. Stephen has given good advice, double check the wiring.
Here are some pictures of mine that might help you:

Holy Crap (can I say crap in this forum) you guys are awesome!!
I really appreciate the quick response and the pictures help greatly!
I am going to post my images as the configuration is a bit different. Maybe that is the problem although I took pictures before and only changed one post at a time on the Solenoid.

Glad to be helpful. We all get frustrated sometimes with our Mustangs, just trying to make it easier if we can.

If you stick around here long enough you'll find we have some of the best guys on the internet here. You can say crap and pretty much anything you like. Our only issue here is not to ever treat the members poorly no matter what. Also we would appreciate a PG13 rating. I would hate to have some Dads or Grandpas here on the forums having there wee ones looking over there shoulder and seeing words not intended. My Mom told me once when I was a kid if I couldn't find a different word than a cuss word it meant I wasn't very educated. Now as corny as that might sound I really try to stick to that for my own pride.
Have a good time here Dennis thats what the Mach 1 Club is intended for!!
Good job moderators way to be on the ball!
Hopefully Dennis got the car turned off by now!

Hello,
I am not sure if this applies to you but. Never know. Sometime around 1995 I had installed one of those "The Electronic Cop" theft deterrent devices. Had a really loud alarm on the inside of the car. It auto armed 2 minutes after you pulled the keys and shut the door, had a remote to disarm. Anyway a time came when .... TA DA, I couldn't shut my car off! After reading tiny schematics in my Chiltons I traced it back to the ignition circuit. Some thing in the device had shorted and melted the hot wire for the electronic cop to the ignition wire giving the coil constant voltage and bypassing the key switch plunger. If your engine keeps running and the starter isn't running, then voltage is getting to your coil. Take a volt meter and take a reading from a good ground to the coil wire preferably with the engine not running. If you have a decent voltage with the key off or removed then you have a short. It could even be in the switch itself. Hope this helps.
I was rethinking this one, if you had smokin hot jumper cables you definitely have a short, those are pretty hefty cables capable of alot of current, it is possible that cracked or melting insulation or melting in your loom going to the solenoid has possibly caused the short.

Once something is on the website it pretty much stays. Also keep in mind you can always right click on any photo and save the pictures to your own computer.

Thanks for the help guys! What a great site and great people!!
After "frying" a couple of Solenoids and a portable jump starter, I finally gave up and had it towed (thank you AAA for the flatbed) to my local repair shop.
The problem was a bad starter. Apparently the starter disintegrated and was causing a system ground.
Once the new starter was installed the car now turns on and turns off.
Thanks again for all your help. If this happens to you in the future, check your starter...
