Hi. It's great to see there's a website just for Mach 1 owners!
I have a 1972 Metallic Silver 302 3 speed - as the original owner! - and it's in pretty good shape. Almost everything is original including glass, but I added power steering and power brakes when I sandblasted it and repainted with original paint a few years ago. It needs a little clutch work and I've just ordered a replacement grill from Laurel Mountain.

Does anyone know if I have to remove the front bumper to replace the grill, or is there a trick around it, because the bumper screws are unfortunately rusted in? Any advice on getting those screws out?

Thanks, Wayne

Welcome to the site from Virginia! Great looking Mach 1 and an original owner! I bet your glad you were able to keep it all these years.

I'm fairly sure the grill on your 72 will come out without removing the bumper. My 73 Convertible with the honeycomb grill came out easily.

Thanks for the comments and advice.
The old grill came out by:
1- removing 1 screw holding each dark decorative headlight ring in place
2- Loosen the 3 screws and twist off the silver ring holding the headlight bulb in place
3- unplug and remove headlight bulb
4- remove 3 screws around each headlight and 1 screw at center support holding grill in place
5- now the grill is loose but you need to remove the 2 beam adjusting screws and spring holding the headlight socket in place.

I was able to get the old grill out but it seemed stuck on each end by the decorative pieces at the front of each fender. It seemed like it might drop out without the bumper in place, but as mentioned I couldn't get the rusted bumper bolts out.

We'll see what happens when the new grill arrives this week!!

You will have to loosen the front bumper at the very least to get the new grill in. When I worked on my 72 it was a pain in the Azz because of the rusted bolts holding the bumper on. Start soaking the bolts now. You might be able to force it in but you'll either crack the grill or scratch the paint on the urethane bumper. I don't think it can even be forced in. Let us know how it works for you, Im just telling you what I experienced.
Glad we got your account sorted out! Very nice Mach 1! Your one lucky guy to be the original owner!! Welcome2
Good luck on the grill, they are definitely not created equal. I bought one and it was a piece of garbage, at least the stainless molding was not done very well and was cheap looking. Ended up buying another one from Scott Drake and it was perfect.

Thanks for the advice. I was afraid I'd have to take the bumper off!!!
That's gonna suck because the bolts are Phillips head screws so it's not like I can get a good grab as with a socket wrench. I may have to grind off the head and then replace the bolts and nuts on the other side too.SCo_hmmthink

The new grill came from Laurel Mountain today and it looks pretty good. The chrome is nice and was covered in the blue protective tape. I'll have to wait until I get home with it to compare the two and see how close a match it is.

I've got some clutch work to do and then... after all these years... I think it's time to sell it to someone who can really enjoy it. I have a few cars, motorcycles, a boat and just don't drive this one as much as I should. It's a shame to just leave it in the garage only to come out every month or so.

What is the best way to sell a mustang? Car Shows? Internet? Are there professional brokers out there? Any advice would be appreciated.

Wow Wayne, what a bombshell and we have only known you for three post. I could only dream of being an original owner of a 1972! Although the options on your car may make it less desirable (302, 3 speed - instead of 351C, 4 speed) it certainly makes it rarer. It is a beautiful one owner car. No one knows your business like you know your business but may I offer my two cents? As far as enjoyement; someone else may use it more but no one will ever have the inner joy with that car like you do when you walk by it from day to day or remember when ... I guess that it comes down to the fact that we are all about owning a Mach 1 so none of us want to hear of one passing on - attachment, sentimental.

So, the best way to sell one. I reckon it is all about publicity to the greatest audience. I think I would try it all. That way you have the greatest audience and be able to reach the greater volume of deeper pockets. You no doubt have a prize find and it is rarely optioned or at least rarely original so sell with patience and persistence.

It is a beautiful car.

Thanks Steven. I've gone around and around for the last 5 years over keeping it or selling it. It's summer again, I just don't drive it much and it's about to go through yet another winter in the garage so I think it's time.

I have a lot of great memories but I think it's time.
Any idea how to value it?
Where do you find brokers?
I wouldn't mind a broker fee if it gets me the high end of the sell price.

Wayne, I agree. You must get the high end for your car.

I do not have any personal auto broker contacts. I typed in classic auto broker New York and came up with this: http://www.gullwingmotorcars.com/ I have viewed their inventory before and they seem to have a nice selection of cars. I am not sure how close they are to you. If they are not close I would do a similar search and start with whoever you find close to begin to test the water. They will give you a starting point at least. Ultimately, I think you want to find someone with an international contact as it seems that our cars are really sought after in Europe and Australia at the current time. Yours appears to be a prime example and just the one owner living history increases the value of sale.

By all means, please let us know what you find out so we can educate ourselves and help the next one in line. Let us know the final outcome as well and if you do list it with a broker, post a link here as well.

All the best.
