I just completed a budget build on my 351 Cleveland 2v. I wanted to see if I could build an engine off craigslist. With quality equipment and little money and lots of time (looking every day for parts). This is how it turned out. I picked up almost everything off craigslist. First the engine came out of a donor car. A 1970 Torino four door, low mileage, 800 dollars. Pulled the engine and all A/C parts and some misc. sold the roller for $500. So engine cost $300. Next water pump, valve covers, valve springs, lifters, Elgin cam, DUI ignition, Hedman headers, Edelbrock intake manifold all of which were brand new (lucky) for 250 dollars!! Ordered from Summit a ring set, bearing set, oil pump and gasket kit $350. Some stuff you just cant get on craigslist. Buddy had a set of ARP head bolts cost $25 and a six-pack Bud light. Picked up an Edelbrock Carb for $125 with a jet kit. Cleaned it up, changed the jets from the kit and repaired the electric choke $25. Harland Sharp 1.73 roller rockers $200 with conversion kit.
Finally misc. stuff +/ $100.
Engine 300
Intake, DUI, cam ect 250
Summit 350
ARP 25
Carb 150
Roller Rockers 200
Misc 100
Total 1375
Has anybody done something like this and how did your build go?
