Anybody changed engine mounts? Is it a fairly straightforward procedure? Any tips?
I have changed engine mounts in other cars and it's pretty straightforward but I thought I would just ask.
I can hear a bit of a knocking noise when idling (not internal engine knocking noise
) and the car is shaking around a bit. Had a look at the passenger side mount and it looks a bit past its used by date......a few cracks that I can see in it. Can't see the drivers side as easily but I imagine it is similar. Will grab some new mounts and have a go.
When you loosen the mount can you raise the engine under the sump with a block of wood to support it?

I'll be the first to answer and let the professionals correct me. I am also speaking from 1970 Torino experience rather than Mach 1 but it was a 351C. The mounts are realatively easy to access and straightforward to remove and replace. I did use a block of wood under the pan to lift the motor with no problems. My suggestion would be to have a go at it slowly, checking all hoses and wires and the z-bar if so equiped. Let us know how it goes for you.

I found out that they changed between 72 & 73.

On the mustangs 71 and 72 used the same mount
73's got a safety mount, no one make it.
You can change it all to 71-2 type mounts

Since you'll have to change it out, you might consider going with urethane engine mounts. They still provide pretty good vibration dampening and are a lot tougher than the standard rubber engine mounts.

I guess I will find out when I go to fit them. They look the same. The ones here that they say fit 65 thru to 73 don't look anything like what is in mine.
The shop I bought them through got them from the US. Took just over a month.

Can anybody with a 73 have a look to see if your mounts look like mine please. I tried yesterday but the drivers side one that I pulled out isn't the same as the new mount. The hole spacing where it goes onto the motor is about 8mm wider on the new one and the mount part where it bolts onto the motor is 10mm wider as well. I don't know if somebody modified some and put them in my car because they couldn't get originals? These aren't originals because it has made in Korea on the old mount.
Needless to say I didn't go any further and attempt the passenger side.
On a side note they are very easy to change out. All the bolt are easy to access. I just put a jack with a block of wood at the end of the block where the sump bolts go just in front of the gearbox to support the weight. When you undo the motor mount you also need to undo the plate/bracket that the mount sits on which is attached to the crossmember. So there is a crossmember then another plate/bracket assembly then the motor mount. When you have all the bolts out the bracket assembly slides out to the side and then out to the front or rear and then the motor mount slides out the front towards the filter. This is on the drivers side. I guess the passenger side will be similar and easier as there is more room that side.

My car is in the U.S. and I live in Mexico so I can't go check for you. Hopefully someone else will come up with the answer. I do know that 73 motor mounts are unique to 73.

My 73 is a 6 cyl convertible, so no help from me either; hopefully someone will post up to help you out. You may need to buy a set of the 71/72 motor mount brackets to make your mounts work.

Steve i should have read this first. mine was doing exactly the same thing and a lot of shudder when taking of from a stop. New mounts fixed the problem but i could not get 73 mounts even though thats what the catalogue said that's what they were. Reality was they were 72 mounts
