1971 Mustang Mach 1 429 Rochester Quadrajet
#1
Brief Question and answer I found in a magazine I thought this might be useful info for someone down the line.

Q.) I have come into possession of a real gem, a 1971 Mustang Mach 1 with a 429 Cobra Jet engine. However the engine is missing. I have found a 429 with no top end. I have been gathering parts. The main trouble is finding the 4 barrel carb. The original was a quadrajet by Rochester. I am sure there is a problem with just grabbing any old quadrajet.
Can I save money by buying and modifying one of the General Motors to fit my Ford?

A.) You are correct sir. There is a problem with grabbing any old quadrajet from the late 60's or early 70's for your Ford. For GM cars, the throttle linkage is different, not to mention the screw in filter and kick down lever. Quadrajets were common in Chevrolet and other GM cars starting in 1965. However, Rochester did make a quadrajet for the 429 Cobra Jet in 1971. The difficulty in tracking down one of these carbs is Rochester did not take the trouble to cast a Ford part number into the housing. They simply used carbs already stamped with GM numbers. Isn't that peachy??
Since these carbs are basically a GM application, with the basic body you could modify to a Ford. However the parts require finding an old Ford version of the quadrajet. According to Pony Carburetors the casting numbers for the Ford application are 7040285, 7040286, 7040287, 7040288. The Ford part numbers are located on a metal tag affixed to the carb. These quadrajets do work well. The back 2 barrels are vacuum operated and large compared to the economy engineered front 2 barrels.

This is exactly the info I was looking for when I just joined. My 71, 429cj is 99% original. One wheel is not correct but should be easy to find. I am missing the Rochester 700cfm Quadrjet and the gas cap assembly. The car is a rarity in that it is a 4 speed, ram air with factory a/c. Does this option group require a specific Rochester? I have checked a few different decoding sites. None of them indicate Ford products. I have done business with Pony Carbs in the past. They are very good but unfortunately at this point, do not have Rochesters of this vintage and model. Thanks for all of your knowledge!

As to your specific question: "Does this option group require a specific Rochester" I would refer you back to Pony Carbs for the answer even though they do not have one. Once you know the exact answer then let the hunt begin.

That is to say, I do not know. There are many others here much more experienced that may be able to definitively answer - let's hope they do.

Have you checked this site?

I had a lot of help of the 429 Megasite during the restoration of my Mach 1 429 CJR.

Finally located a Rochester Quad for my 71 429cj. Matches up with 429cj-r 4sp/ac. Last one on planet?? Paid a PRETTY penny for it, but worth it! Will be restored. All I need now is one 15x7 chrome ring for a wheel.
