OK...previous owner (AKA, the idiot who restored this beauty!!!) let all the important cable dangle onto the muffler, muffler pipes, and even on the exhaust manifold. As a result, the speedo cable and shifter cable melted. I've successfully located and replaced the shifter cable, but cannot find the right speedo cable. The tranny is a C4, but this is not an original tranny. The cable I found from Laurel Mountain had the correct ends, but is about 18 inches too short. I have found one from West Coast Cougar, but the guy there says it will not work even though it is only 4 inches shorter than the one we took out.
What I need is an idea where I can find one that has the correct ends and is MINIMUM 76 inches long. The one that came out was 80 inches. I've Googled it, Yahooed it, Lycosed it, etc. I've also gone through all the parts sellers online that I've found.
Does anyone here have any secret(s) that they would willingly pass on to me? I need to find this cable to complete the leak stoppage in this tranny!!
TIA

Kodaking,
Have you tried NAPA? I needed a speedo cable for my 67' GT and they carried one they stated would fit and it ended up being to long. I typically don't recommend your run of the mill parts house, but in this case they had a part in stock that got me out of trouble for a while. I ended going to Mustangs Unlimited to get the right length and stop the speedo needle from jumping about 5 mph +/-. Also try Ohio Mustang Supply, they seem to like the 71 - 73 models there and have found many parts others don't want to mess with. Good luck.

Have you looked behind the dash to make sure your speedo cable goes straight from the gearbox to the speedo.
I thought I had broken mine recently as when I pulled the instruments out about 12" of the inner speedo cable came out stuck in the speedo. I ordered another speedo (mine is FMX gearbox) and went to fit it but found that up behind the dash there is another assembly that the speedo cable from the gearbox screws into then it goes out to the speedo. I did a search but couldn't find any info so I thought that it might be a speed sensor. It has part number D2AF-9E731-AA and has wiring that goes into the harness. Make sure yours doesn't have anything like this in there because it has screw on fittings on each side.
I think I might have found some info on page 12 of the 73 Wiring diagram manual that I found hidden here
I think it has something to do with the EGR stuff even though mine doesn't seem to have any of the other bits.

@ BKDunha - Have checked with local parts stores, but we no longer have NAPA here in this area, so cannot check with them. I'm not a gearhead
so I am left to the trust of the mechanic I've finally found to make the repairs. He's good, honest, and CHEAP!!!! (However he DOES want me to spend MAJOR bucks on this car!!!) Have not heard of Ohio, so I will DEFINITELY be looking to them for help! Thanks!
@ Oztrailer - You speak so far above my head, I think I need FAA clearance for the info!!!
I appreciate the thoughts, though, and will pass them on to the mechanic. We seem to make a good team...I know the computer and how to search for info, and he knows how to decipher that info into usable results!! As for what's been done, he removed the old cable, so I'm fairly certain he's aware of its path. Add to that the Frankenstein nature of the way this car was reassembled, and there's no telling what it will take to make it work!
Thanks Again!

Found the cable needed at 3 Guys Auto Parts...it was a win/lose situation...they HAD the part, but they didn't communicate with me very well. Oh well....problem solved either way!!!

Got mine from NPD but I think it was a little longer than the original, better than too short I guess.
