Hello Fellow Mach 1 owners

Wink

I am the proud owner of a 1973 Mach 1 clone. I could go on and on with the interesting story of this car, but I will save you all the drama. The short story is that this car was made into a racer about 6 months after being sold as a standard coupe off the showroom floor. Body panels were removed and stored in climate control. After 20 or so years on the track, the car was sold to a man who rebuilt it as a Mach 1. It has almost all the Mach 1 items...wheels, stripes, interior. I am adding the front and rear spoilers and then hoping to add the hood stripe. I'm not exactly sure which engine it has. Was told when I bought it that it was a factory 302 bored .30 over, but upon further inspection, it is NOT a factory engine.

I am NOT a gearhead, and only marginally understand a lot of what I am talking about. I would love to learn more, but am honestly only in this to enjoy the beauty of this amazing car, visually and audibly.

I have recently found a reliable mechanic who is helping me get this work of art back on the road (I've not driven her in 6 years) and fix all the mistakes that the re-builder made. Perhaps one day I'll list a few of them so you can all cringe!!!! The guy was apparently a real Loser.

Thanks for welcoming me here, in spite of my mechanical ignorance!!

Hey! Good lookin' car!!

This might sound a little against the grain, but I'm not a purist, and I'm OK with not sticking to 'the rules' when it comes to restorations. Even though mine's a Mach 1, I'm not going to restore it to be a 100-point car show winner... I intend mine to be a daily drive once I get 'er running again.

Just because your car wasn't 'born' a Mach 1, doesn't mean it can't 'be' a Mach 1 - every Mustang has a little Mach 1, Boss, or Shelby inside dying to get out.

Obviously, you're taking pains in restoring the car, so I say, "Have at it and keep us posted!"

Thanks for the encouraging words...I'm definitely going to make it look and sound AWESOME. Ordering some tuned Hooker headers this weekend to chrome out the exhaust. Got a new steering wheel on the way, and the mechanic is arranging for someone to paint the hood stripe.

One question....do you (or anyone else, for that matter) know where to get a factory coolant overflow tank? I need the plastic one, not the mega-expensive stainless ones.....can't find them anywhere.

Welcome to the site
Sounds like your car has some great history. Were you lucky enough to get any pictures of its original racing history?

No, unfortunately not. It passed through a couple of different owners between its racing career and me. With the body parts stored, I'm fairly certain that it didn't LOOK like a Mustang while it was on the track. I'm lucky, though, that they stored the body in climate control...there is absolutely ZERO rust on it! Awesome
