I am curious if anyone has ever tried or discovered a way to utilize your cars VIN number to research prior ownership. I am trying to determine if any prior owners may have photo's of the car or if they recall any changes they have done. The car does not appear to have been in any major accidents, but I am curious to find out what I can. I guess it is only some of the additional curiosity that I have in my cars history. I know where and when the car was sold in Utah, but not much after that.

Tough to track down if you don't have some old paperwork found in the car.
A Vehicle Identification Number, commonly abbreviated to VIN (but sometimes incorrectly referred to as VIN number), is a unique serial number used by the automotive industry to identify individual motor vehicles. Prior to 1981, there was no accepted standard for these numbers, so different manufacturers used different formats.
Because of this it makes it tough to track unless you know some prior owner.
The thing I love about mine is I'm the second owner.

Personally I've kept a paperwork trail on anything done to my Mach since I picked her up at the dealership.
Okay it is only a 2003 but one day may be considered a classic.
Documentation, documentation, documentation.
That is something to think about when I am able to get myself a classic. Soon as I have the funds, I'll have to make the decision which is 1st.
1968 Fastback; std preferred either S-Code or R-Code <-- ya I know that'll be costly
--or--
1969 Mach 1; 'shakered', std with hopefully an S-Code or R-Code.
The 'R' code vin be great to have with my 2003 R-Code Mach.
