I have the 2V 351 in my 72. Was wondering what mods,to consider to get a few more horses out of that baby. I think it came stock around 200.... but its a torque MONSTER which I guess is pretty important in a car that weighs close to three tons.
Anyway, I already have a hi-flow holley carb, C6 tranny w/shift kit and 9" rear end but I'm going to keep going and just wondered what kind of results you all may have had.
Thanks

Heads, exhaust, and gears would be where I would start.

Hopefully you weight estimate of 3 tons is a guess. The 72's should be well under 2 tons, around 3,500 pounds I believe without checking. My 73 Convertible is 3,306 pounds. Hopefully you don't have an extra ton of body putty!
Good luck with your mods!

Lots of people wiser than I have said that it all starts with the cam.
Therefore, I'm going to do the following to mine:
- Rebuild with .020" or .030" bore (hopefully .020")
- 10:1 Forged Flat Top pistons
- Roller Cam (not too wild, but a bit warmer than stock)
- Roller Rockers
- Double roller timing gears
- 3-angle valve job with rebuilt heads (and hardened valve seats)
- Edelbrock Dual-Plane Performer Intake
- Edelbrock Performer 600CFM carb
- MSD ignition
- FlowTech ceramic headers
- 2.5" exhaust
- Flowmaster 40s (or Magnaflow equivalent)
I might go with full-time Ram-Air (a cheap CAI solution), or incorporate a CAI under the hood along with the active Ram-Air. Dunno yet.
I'm hoping to get somewhere between 350 and 400 out of my 351C-2V. Is that a realistic goal? Any other suggestions would be welcomed.

Hey With what you have listed your goal is very realistic. the 351 Cleveland has some of the best stock heads available the 2V are way bigger in the ports and valves then anything Chevy ever offered. As far as the cam goes it is definetly is the soul of an engine. Look up Comp Cams online. They have a program you can down load to your computer, that you can plug in your specs and it will chose the best cam for your combination. Or call them direct, either way they will take the guess work out of it for you. Don't be stingy with the cam, An engine is nothing but an Air Pump! the more you can get in and the more you can get out the faster it will go!

Every one is right the cam is the soul of the engine. The cleveland 2 bbl heads have better ports than about any chevy of the day had. So my best recomendation is also before you buy a cam talk to CAM RESEARCH in Englewood Co. #303-762-0022 They only do FORD cams and they are GURU's. They will custom grind a cam for your set-up based on what you tell them. But be honest as to what you want your engine and car to do. Otherwise you are well on your way with what you are looking at doing.

You bet. I grew up in Denver and raced at bandomier speedway for years. Anyway I have used these guys for along time. They do great machine work if you need it as well. Scott Main ( I think thats how its spelled) has been great to work with and I think he is the owner. I have worked with most of the guys there and they are great. Another machine shop was ( I dont know if there still in business) Maximun auto parts up I think on west colfax. I used them when Cam research was backed up , they do equally good work but are not quite as good with ford knowledge., but do good machine work.

I d/l'd the Comp Cams utility and it's actually pretty cool. I chose a slightly different path and discovered that with the cam I was thinking about (32-411-8, 260HR grind), and switching to Edelbrock RPM heads, I should expect 425-450 hp (peak). I'm not THAT optimistic - however, I like the way they think! The bummer about the Dual-Plane is that it'll be too tall to work with the factory Ram-Air - which I'm hoping to use just for the coolness factor (and since my flappers and such still actually work) - so I'll probably wind up sticking with the Performer intake. Definitely loves me some Edelbrock.

Mister 4x4 Eric, You are right. the trouble with alot of aftermarket manifolds is height, especially if you want to retain the stock ram air set-up. My personal manifold of choice is the holley strip dominator wich is an air gap style manifold and is quite taller than stock. However with the RPM's I turn the engine to and the kind of horsepower that particular manifold makes, it works the best for me and the height of the manifold is only a minor inconveniance. I have found with some aftermarket aircleaners that drop down slightly you can still get the benefit of the ram air, although not sealed to the air cleaner like the factory unit was. I also kept my vacuum motors but took them off so I feed my engine cooler air constantly. With trying a couple different aircleaners and being careful shutting the hood to check for clearance I came up with a combination that fits up in the ram air chamber nicely. You are also correct in comp cams having good software to help with cam selection, most cam companys any more have some form of software or a tech line that are very helpful for that. I would again suggest to anyone building a ford though to check with cam research in englewood Co. They do only ford cams and the owner himself races fords and mustangs. I have had my engines with there cams make more power than about anyone elses comparable cam has. For me it just makes sense to use them since they only do cams for fords and not some of the cam manufacturers who try and make a chevy grind "work" in a ford.As far as edelbrock heads for your cleveland , I would strongly suggest if you can afford it to go with the CHI brand heads as they smoke edelbrocks in making power and flow rates, but they cost more. Anyway goodluck wich ever way you go.
