Is Ford Working On An EcoBoost Mustang?
#1
Inside Line recently published spy photos of a mysterious Ford Mustang in testing. On the outside, the car looks like any other V6 Mustang with Brembo brakes and custom wheels. Look inside, and there are two clues that all is not as it appears: first, the dash is labelled “premium fuel only”, and second, the tach redlines at 8,000 RPM. Even the front fascia is revised to allow better airflow, either for radiator cooling, an intercooler or both. Could this mean that a V6 EcoBoost Mustang is under development? I hope so.

As tuned for the F-150, the EcoBoost motor puts out 365 horsepower and 420 ft lb of torque. Better yet, 90% of the motor’s torque is available from 1,700 to 5,000 RPM, meaning that you don’t need to wind the motor all the way out to make power. Fuel economy for the EcoBoost motor has yet to be determined, but it’s safe to assume it will be better than that of the 5.0 liter V8, rated at 17 mpg city and 26 mpg highway. Weight of the 3.5 liter EcoBoost motor is about the same as the 5.0 liter Coyote V8, so there won’t be any significant change in the car’s balance.

When a Ford engineer was asked why the current V6 Mustang was limited to a top speed of 112 MPH, he ran through a list of possibilities. Of those, the most likely culprit was cooling; for whatever reason, the V6 ‘Stang doesn’t flow enough air across the radiator to meet Ford’s standards (which are probably absurd, like running at wide open throttle in 110 degree temperatures). That will need to be addressed before the EcoBoost motor gets a green light in the car, because an absurdly low top speed just won’t fly for this particular model.

So where would that put the forced induction ‘Stang in the product mix? Probably above the current GT, but well below the Shelby GT500. The EcoBoost is considered a premium engine
in the F-150, and commands a $1,750 premium over the base 3.7 liter V6. If you’re going to ask more money for a turbocharged V6 Mustang, it had better be faster and offer improved handling over the GT, and that’s a fairly tall order.

Awesome Hey Guys; I just happen to own a 2008 Mustang 4.0 V6. Its rated at 210hp with a 5 spd standard. It will propel this little car very quickly to its top end of 117mph, which is about 3500 rpm in 4th gear which says there is a lot left in this combination. I've been told the limit is due to the tires. Which consequently have a speed rating of, you guessed it 117mph. Ford tells me they can not turn off the speed limiter for various reasons. I've also found out you will have to buy a programer to turn it off. As much as I would enjoy being able to find the top end of my Mustang. I'm not sure I want to spend about $400.00, by the way they claim i can increase the horse power by about 30 horse with the tuner. So lets add this up 210 stock,+ 20hp for full 2 1/2 Duals, +15hp for a cold air intake,+ about 30hp for the tuner. Oh I forgot Muscle Mustang and Fast Fords dynoed one of these 2008 4.0 V6 like mine and found it put out 225hp so thats 15 right off the bat That should make the total 290Hp. As it stands now I have the full duals which made a very noticable difference in the low end torque you could feel in the seat of your pants and the sound is awesome (the duals are all ford by the way you cut the y pipe and use the dual pipes and mufflers from a GT) I would drool all over myself if I could get anywhere near 290 hp out of my V6. As it stands now I've out run every Chevy truck I've come up against. (remember I live in Arkansas, the land of the hillbilly sports car, A V8 pickup with loud pipes.) I also ran up against a 2010 Camaro the other day on the 2 lane, he dropped out to pass and I followed, I saw him look in the mirror and then he mashed it to the floor, I obligingly did the same. The funny thing is he didn't run and hide, in fact I started to catch him as I shifted to 4th. His Camaro is supposed to have a 304hp V6. It was an automatic, but he still should have been able to out run me. OR? has GM fed everyone a line of Bull once again! All I know is when we came to the next town, He looked at my car and saw it wasn't a GT and just shook his head. I don't think he was very proud of his new Camaro. I was sure as heck proud of my little Mustang. I could only dream of having 365 hp. It's the stuff dreams are made of!
