Would you pay a premium to speed?
#1

Now here is an interesting concept that one Nonpartisan Nevada gubernatorial candidate has proposed. Eugene “Gino” DiSimone (wonder if he’s Italian) has proposed a plan that would allow drivers to pay $25 for the privilege of speeding down Nevada’s highways. Interesting idea, no? Right now the national speed limit is 55 mph, a number that to be honest is ungodly slow for today’s roads and current crop of automobiles. It was mandated back in 1973 during the countries first fuel crises and has been stuck in place ever since. Gino’s plan however raises a good question – if you could pay a premium to speed in designated areas on America’s public roads, would you?

Just sit back and think about this for a moment. As mentioned the national public speed limit is set at 55 mph. Some states like Nevada have their limit set at 70 mph which makes sense since only 7 people live in that state. But what if you could cruise down the majority of America’s highways at 100 mph or even 120 mph… would you pay to do so? If you’ve ever driven across this great nation of ours you’ve no doubt notice that between New York and LA there isn’t a whole bunch going on. Sure it’s beautiful
, but aside from the scenery what you are greeted to are thousands and thousands of miles of open super-slab. These roads are more than capable of sustaining automobiles cruising at speeds of 100 mph or more.

Obviously there would be some safety concerns here because as we all know, people have a tenancy to get out of hand. If speeds could be monitored however by way of transponders as our friend Gino DiSimone proposes, it may not be such a bad idea. Participating states would see big gains in revenue, people would be getting to their destinations faster and as a whole, America’s highways would be more fun to cruise on. I for one am digging this proposal, but how about you guys? Think it would work??

Virginia is in the process of raising some of the Interstate Speed Limits to 70 MPH. Right now the highest is 65.

I'd love to hit the speed limiter on my Mach but now in Ontario there is a law that if you are caught 50km over you loose your car on the spot for 7 days and then you have to go to court to see what happens next.

Wow thats pretty strict! In Arizona in certain cities if you are 20 over the speed limit you can go to jail but don't lose your car.

Ya it sucks.........it also applys to doing anything else like racing, squealing tires blah blah blah....
I am really afraid of some butt head pulling up beside me at a light and squealing their tires and a cop thinking it was me.

Gears Sorry about the late reply. I missed this one but I'm definetly in favor of the WFO! idea. I used to drive a Big Truck that was limited to 62mph, and the trip from New York to San Francisco, was more torture Sad then I care to remember. So yeah charge me one the front end and keep the points off my liscense! Why do you think they called our cars Mach1's anyway? Gears JTS 71 Mach1

Of course the premium is a little steeper but enter the Targa Tasmania!

Watch a couple of the Targa Tasmania videos or one of Peter Winn and his father in their 1973 Mach 1 and you will know that you have found your thrill.

Here is what would happen;
Since the world is so linked in on the information highway, Insurance companies would hone in on the users who paid the fee and jack up the cost of insurance so high that we would all have garage queens instead of driving cars.
Texas like other states is pushing an 80MPH limit through the house.

Many other states will follow suit but only a bit at a time.
The truth is that all of the roads are now so crowded that like the famous autobahn......the cars cannot be driven that fast even if it is legal to do so.

Id rather just take my chances, remain anonomous and drive like hell on the back roads away from traffic.
I still have to fix a darned head gasket leak first.....lolCrazy
