73 Mustang Factory Forged Aluminum Wheels Versus Factory Sport Wheel Covers
#1
As many of you know I have owned my 73 Mustang
Convertible since 1974. It came with the Trim Rings
and Hub Caps. In the late 70's I traded for the Sports
Wheel Covers (see first pic of the 73 Mustang
Brochure to compare options). A few weeks ago
I installed a great set of original 1973 factory
Forged Aluminum Wheels and raised letter
tires. I really like the wheels, but I can't get
use to the way the car looks now. I guess
after looking at the Sports Wheel Covers for
over 30 years I'm stuck on them.

Anyway please take a look and vote for the
"LOOK" you like the best! Thanks!

I'm kinda thinking I like the forged better. You dont see them everywhere and imo, they really look good tucked under your pony!Rockxtreme

Forged Aluminum Wheels and raised letter tires are the look I like best!

Purist would want you to make it look like the day it left the factory. I feel you should make it your own. If you can keep both sets around your covered either way! SSig_goodjob

Factory Aluminum wheels look the best on all 73 Mustangs in my opinion.

Your Convertible looks awesome with them on.

I followed suit and voted for the aluminum wheels as the best look for your Mustang. Although I have to say I like the sports wheel covers as I had them on my first Ford a 1970 GT Torino. Back in those days I could barely afford to buy a set (2) tires at a time let alone consider rims. My friend with a Mach 1 had the hubcaps with trim rings and although I was not a fan them I have become one. You have a Mustang convertible - how can you go wrong!

Actually, there are several versions of the sport wheel cover, 14" and 15", center disc colors, (a dark grey metallic center and an argent center), and lastly- a deep dish version and shallow version. The shallow type are pictured on Oldpony's convertible. The deep dish versions actually look more like mag wheels and look more appealing. Cars with 6" wide steel rims got the shallow type, and cars with 7" wide steel rims received the deep dish type. The deep dish type won't fit on the narrower rims, so you'll have to find a set of 14X7 or 15X7 deep dish steel wheels for a torino or mustang. They're actually quite difficult to find.

I had a set of the deep dish ones, but I sold them on ebay. They were a little scuffed up on the edges, but had nice center emblems. It seems like I read somewhere the sport hubcaps with the argent centers were the 1970 version, and the darker ones were 71 to 73. Here are a couple of pics of the deep dish ones I sold on eBay a couple of years ago for comparison.

Actually, all '70 versions got the dark grey center. The argent-color center came into play with the 71-73 cars. Technically, the argent caps were used with the argent 2-tone machs, and machs with the black on the lower body received the darker-colored center when the sport wheel covers were specified. Also, the sport wheel covers were available on all models, not just mach-1's, and the lighter colored cars got the argent caps while the darker cars (non-machs) got the darker caps. Of course, I'm sure there were cars delivered to customers with just the opposite- lots of dealers indiscriminately plopped them on cars at customer's requests.
