NACA / NASA Hood Scoops

A little history and clarification of this design element:
NACA (National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics) formed in 1915 was the precursor to NASA and focused on airplane design, and later breaking the sound barrier (mach 1), and also space flight. NACA became NASA in 1958, with a major public focus on space flight during the space race ( http://history.nasa.gov/naca/overview.html ). According to the book, Mustang 1964-1973 by Mike Mueller, the scoops were incorrectly called NASA scoops, given that governmental agency's popularity. The air duct was actually specially designed by NACA for use in airplanes, and was utilized by race car builders in the 1960s (Mueller). Wikipedia has a cool article on the NACA scoop design with photos so check it out!! ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NACA_duct ). The scoop design is explained in detail in the article: The Scoop on the NACA Scoop by Peter Garrison, Flying magazine, Sep 2004. By the way, the underhood air cleaner setup on the 71-73 Mach is similar to that of the 1968 1/2 428 CJ.

Great info; I've never heard them referred to as "NACA" hoods before.

Great bit of info. I knew the correct term was NACA, and I knew it had to do with aeronautics, but i never had a clue it was what became NASA! I still think it's the greatest looking hood ever. My boy's 89 has a mach1 style (ceravini?) hood. Sure beats the heck out of a cowl hood.

I've been in aviation almost my whole life and when I got into these Mustangs I heard people call them Nasa scoops, I always thought they looked just like Naca scoops that I see on airplanes.

Yeah, it took Bob 6 months and he didn't do a good job. I only gave him half the money and I will have to take him to small claims to get the rest.

DUDE I TOLD YOU!!!! Sorry to hear it man. I tell you what you should check out the Earl Schieb on CaveCreek Road. They do a good job overall really, especially if you do some taping and removing of parts prior to painting it. Its not the paint job really its in the prep is where they lack, you also need to have the car color sanded after a week or so to bring out the clear in the paint I waited 6 months since the car was always in my garage. They painted my Trans Am and did a great job for me.
Does the Stang look terrible??

Excellent information - in fact I think I will memorize the wikipedia article just to mesmerize any unsuspecting questioner .. "This design is believed to work because the combination of the gentle ramp angle and the curvature profile of the walls creates counter-rotating vortices which deflect.." So they are NACA scoopes due to the fact that the actual scoop was designed prior to NASA in 1945. Do we have a date on the actual design of the scoop or to whom the design is credited?
Appropriate for the Mach 1 - more than any other car.
Good to be part of the forum - carry on!
